Dog needs a job . . .

5 mo. old female sheltie. Since we got her, she has learned not to jump on people so much (still does but so much better than before), and to not mouth us. She has learned to sit and down and walks fairly well on a leash except she is afraid of cars. She is still chewing a lot and is not 100% potty trained, so she is confined to two tiled rooms. I am attempting to teach her to use a bell since she seems to not be interested in telling us in any other way that she needs to go out.

She seems bright but pretty high strung. Sometimes the only way we can calm her down is to pick her up. She gets very upset when anyone leaves the house. She loves to play fetch, and we play outside at least twice a day, with a weekly visit to the dog park and a couple of walks a week. Obedience classes do not start until June.

I think this dog is bored. She would like a job. Sheep are not available. She wants to herd the children or at least get them up in the morning, but then she peed in their rooms, so that job had to end. Now she just barks from downstairs until they get up. No fun for the person downstairs with her. She is not in the least bit interested in chasing squirrels or birds, which is what kept our last Sheltie sane. She destroys any ball given to her within a day. I am trying to figure out something to make her life more interesting - there is someone home with her almost all the time, but she is still spending a lot of time locked in the kitchen with nothing to do. I was warned not to use light or lazer toys with Shelties. She has a food cube that she gets part of her daily calories from but that takes her about 10 minutes. She has lots of chew toys and dental treats to help with the gnawing. I know her life (and mine) will get better when we have the housebreaking/chewing stage done, but that seems months away.

What keeps your dog busy if they are an only dog?

What sort of training, other than the basics, do you do with her? Merlin was clicker trained by 16 weeks and I have taught him lots of different behaviours. I find a session of clicker really tires out his brain and he sleeps well, and we also have lots of stimulating walks in different locations.

To be honest, I think even a pup needs a walk almost every day. Even if it just a short one. It is essential for stimulation and socialisation and a lot of problems can occur when they are pent up all the time. As your pup, completely understandably, is kept in the kitchen due to accidents then I would definitely be doing two short walks a day. It may also help encourage her to pee outside more.

Bear in mind she is still a pup and is teething, so the chewing is to be expected - Merlin was horrendous, in fact he can still have moments. Socks and plastic pens are his favourites.

Extra walks and some fun trick training should help tire her out and relieve boredom.

You need to provide some mental, as well as physical, stimulation for your pup.

More walks will tire her our physically.

As for mental, teach some new tricks or get some more 'thinking toys'. The Nina Ottosson toys are GREAT toys for the dog needed mental stimulation. They come in different levels of difficulty Believe it or not the mental stimulation will actually tire her out more than the physical activity.

A better balance of both physical and mental stimulation will make for a happier pup.

Thanks for the suggestions. Went for a nice long walk tonight, and she is still up and wired at midnight. I have never seen anything like those toys - they look great, but she would definitely chew them to bits. We do like the buster cube - she is the third sheltie to use it, so they are pretty much indestructible. Not so the plastic ball that dispenses food, that got a hole in it within a couple of hours. I want to get one of the puzzles anyway, she would love it, just have to sit right next to her to make sure she does not destroy it.

Obedience classes start next month, and I know that will be very good for us.

Does anyone jog with their sheltie?

Shelby is 2 and like your pup gets bored very quickly (she is much better now that she is older). I walk her daily weather permitting, plenty of play time in the yard. I did use different toys like the treat ball but she always figured out how to get them apart and dump all the food out. Lots of training helped her too. I also incorporate training into play time. Now we visit at the nursing home for an hour or so and then she is exhausted when we get home. Shelby loves to chase the birds, rabbits, bugs etc. We have train tracks behind the house and she loves to run the fence with the trains when they come by. Your little one will bet better as she matures

Does anyone jog with their sheltie?

My daughter does. She usually does somewhere between 3-5 miles. Dandie does great, she has a lot of stamina and thoroughly enjoys it. We did not start her jogging until she was 1 years old, and then we started her out slow. We wanted to make sure that we didn't injure any of her growing bones/joints/tendons.
