Ok, jumping in finally!

Why would anyone need or want a doggy door!? I personally prefer to have my boys on a regular schedule. And they are 98% regular!

I think the doggie door just opens up to the pups regulating to their schedule instead of yours. The problem with that is if you like to cart them around to visit or car rides to cottage or whatever, if they are on their own schedule, you might find yourself doing quick walks that you would not otherwise have to do.

We have used dog doors for years and once house trained and dog door trained we don't have to worry about 98% as they are 100% in going out side to do their duty. When we were both working we were gone from 12-14 hrs a day and this gave our dogs the the opportunity to go outside to do their duty as necessary and to have some freedom to go outside on their own and not be cooped up inside or in a crate for lengthy periods of time.

Even now that I am retired and am home most of the time it gives them more freedom and I don't have to be watching them every minute. For the average person I am sure that most dogs spend 90% of their lives at home and though it could be a little more inconvenient when you take them somewhere we believe the freedom it gives them at home to be less stressful on the dogs and ourselves.

They have the kitchen, eating area and sitting area to themselves when we are gone as well as having acess to the backyard to exercise their freedom when we are not at home.

I got a removable door to use when staying with family and was not happy with it. Had to get a large size because the medium was too narrow for an oversize sheltie. Then my brother showed me how easy it was for someone to climb through the door - and he has a middle age spread so a younger or smaller male thief would have no problems. Plus the kids could also climb through it. Now no-one will let me use the door at their place and I wasted $400.

What your brother in law has demonstrated is true and even though most crooks are pretty stupid anyway to take the chance of coming through a dog door with the possiblity of a dog biting at them as they come through should be enough for second thought. Not including the possibility of me being on the other side of the dog door kicking the you know what out of them as they try to come through.

Should that we happen to not be home and the dogs not home either we know the alarm system will go off with the motion detectors or when they open the door to leave. This would probably spook them so that nothing major is taken away and small valuables are hidden away in safes that they would have difficulty locating anyway.

Surprisingly, it doesn't work out that way! My girls have had the door all their lives. It's only closed when there's enough rain to muddy up the house. They go in and out as they choose, and when we travel, it's no hassle. Even camping works well. They adjust.

They have a ;large fenced in area, and they keep deer and rabbits from the garden right outside the yard. They alert us to anyone coming upthe drive -- it's a special bark they use -- and get so much exercise! For us, it works brilliantly!

Barb, to be fair, there is one problem. Most days we have more outdoors indoors that we need. In the fall, leaves swirl through the family room, and Bits brings in whole branches!
