Dog's neck is slashed in grooming

This article is extremely worrisome for me.

I've been trying to hire a groomer for my store for several months, and only just discovered how unregulated the industry is.

The reality is that anyone can call themselve a groomer, whether they are working out of thier home or a pet store.

They are not required to belong to a professional assocation at all. There truly is no such thing as a licensed groomer.

This has to change.
 
I think I already mentioned that I went to the Pet Smart here with my westie and was asked if I was interested in a job grooming in the grooming salon. Just think, I could have groomed shelties to look like bald faced westies or maybe a miniature schnauzer - I do a mean schnauzer trim. Now that I say it, it sounds like there are a few groomers out there that did that to some of your shelties. I think if I were looking for a groomer to work in my store I would contact a school of grooming to see if they had some good canidates for the position.

I've tried going to the local grooming college.....not a single response....I can't believe it!
 
I'm wayyy too paranoid to take my boys anywhere after everything I've seen and heard. I've always just done them myself in the kitchen sink. I don't have any professional grooming equipment besides my Dremel Stylus. Everything else is just cheap round ended small scissors, a slicker and pin brush, and a gallon of concentrated dog shampoo. Do those of you that go to groomers (or want to) go because your dog is difficult to bathe? Is it a time issue? I'm just curious because I've always enjoyed this part of dog ownership. ( I don't have kids so maybe that's why?)
 
After more than 30 years of bathing multiple westies weekly, stripping coats daily and at the same time keeping up with Belgian coats, I am relieved to not have to bath and blow out our sheltie. I used to have a 4' tub that was raised to comfy height in my dog room at the old house. Probably would be bathing Tin myself if I still had it but now it is a laundry tub that barely does a westie and a sore back that doesn't like leaning into the people tub. Also the house here and the accompanying farm with horses takes up a lot of time so having to vaccuum through more than I already do is more than I can stand to think of. Our groomer is great, she knows the breed as she has both collies and shelties and she does the rescues that come in so she knows how to handle a fearful dog. I'm also a perfectionist when it comes to grooming so I would be making sure each hair is in place and Tin looked as close to walking into a show ring as he could. For some reason it doesn't bother me if there is too much fluff in the breeches or not enough in the collar when Meagan does it. I'm sure Tinsel appreciates not having to suffer through me doing him.
