drinking lots of water

My sheltie Riley has been drinking alot of water lately. When I fill his water bowl up, he will just about empty it and what goes in must come out. Which means he is peeing a lot as well. I will be taking him to the vet this week. How concerned should I be? What could be the issue?

BTW, he is an inside dog.
 
how long as this being going on for? It could be a number of things and it could be nothing.

My maltese out of no where started drinking water excessively and ended up having cushings disease, but she was 10 years old.
