Drooling

Liam will drool if he is waiting for food - ie mealtime or if I am eating something he wants. There will sometimes be a pool on the floor right under his mouth (and he is standing). Emma occasionally drools for food.

I feel a bit relieved then that Buddha isn't the only sheltie that drools out there. In general I don't mind the dog breeds that are known for drooling because that's just the way they are, but I was just curious if something was maybe wrong with Buddha. I suppose that since he's always been a drooler it isn't a sign that something is wrong. He will mostly drool when he is excited and playing with his toys or in the car. Buddha is a very messy drinker too. He drips water everywhere on the floors I'm glad to hear maybe he will grow out of that!
 
If he has always drooled excessively then likely he is just fine but if it is something that has gotten worse over time then I would check his teeth first and if they are okay then I would consider talking it over with the vet to make sure nothing is out of kilter. Tinsel drools a bit but he can't close his mouth properly and is missing several teeth. My Belgian had a couple of extractions done last year and she drools noticeably now whereas before it was primarily when she was nervous - think a storm was coming in. I would suggest that you make sure that you occasionally gently dry the area around his lips and chin to avoid lip fold dermatitis or irritation of the skin under the lower mandible.

Well I know that I've had 8 shelties in my short lifetime, and we've never really had a sheltie that drooled a lot either until my parents adopted our Cody Monster a couple years ago. He's the only sheltie that I've ever seen, or have ever had that has drooled a lot. But then again we rescued him from somebody, and we're not completely sure if he's pure bred sheltie, or if he's a sheltie/collie mix.
 
Well Buddha has been done with teething for a while now he turns 1 year old tomorrow :smile2: I have started noticing that he drools a lot more in the mornings when I take him out to potty and he is smelling around how very strange. I will definitely bring it up to our next vet visit. He has had a hacking cough for about a week now that I want to have checked out. He has started coughing during excitement and when he pulls on the leash too hard but he had never done that before until recently : / The drooling he has always done so I'm sure it's not related to the random coughs he's been having.
 
I've never know Shelties to drool either.

I think its worth checking out at your next vet appointment.

Also, drooling could be a sign of anxiety. Is your pup anxious?
 
Did you end up taking Buddha to the vet?

I saw a show recently about a dog who was drooling exessively. The dog was healthy but the drooling was abnormal so they gave him something that helped. Mind you, this was a great dane, not a sheltie. :smile2:
