I am so excited! I am finally going to get my little girl!!! I have done my shopping and have just about everything that I could possibly need for her but I have a question about when I bring her home. I will have to travel about 5 1/2 t0 6 hours to pick her up and then another on the way back home. I know that this is a long time to be traveling and I don't think that the breeder has ever taken her in a car. She does all of the puppy shots there at her kennel. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to handle her on such a long ride home and what do I need to watch for in her once we do get her home. The last pup I got was a little older that she will be and the ride wasn't quite as long. Chico was 6 months old and Dutchess will be 17 weeks. I would appreciate any and all suggestions and comments. I want to be the best mom I can for her so I definitely want to be prepared. I do have some ginger snaps that I plan on taking for her just in case.

thanks for all input!

Congratulations!!!

I'm bringing my pup Merlin home on Saturday too.:smile2:When I brought my lab Cadbury home we had to drive 5 hours. He was only 8 weeks, so I brought a towel and laid it on the back seat next to me. He was a little too big to sit in my lap, but he laid on the towel and slept.

Halfway I stopped and put him in a newspaper lined cardboard box I had brought so he could have a wee. (He hadn't had any jabs). He didn't go, but drank a little water and then we got back in the car.

When I bring Merlin home I will carry him on my lap, on a towel in case of accidents. My mum will drive me so all my attention can be on him.

Enjoy your pup! I love the name!

How exciting!

With our most recent puppy we traveled 9 hours to get here, and 9 hours back. I was really worried about her having to potty, and putting her out at a rest stop before she had her final shots. She slept the ENTIRE ride. She cried for the first 10 minutes, and I turned her crate around so she could see us, and she didn't make a peep the rest of the ride.

I thought it would be safer to keep going since she was asleep.

Wonderful news!! We traveled 4 hours up and 4 hours back when we got Layla -- and than again a couple of months later with Bits. Both slept the whole ride -- and Layla rode along for the return trip to get Bits:

Too cute Chris! I love Sheltie book ends.:biggrin2:

Cran's ride was about 4 hours from the breeder's and then 4 more hours in his new little carrier to get home. we did let him walk around the grass at the Cracker Barrel where we met- it was raining so probably all the bad stuff had washed away. I did have my other dogs in the car with him and he did sleep most of the way. complained a little and then fell asleep- pretty sure he wanted to play already :wink2:

How sweet Chris!!! I am planning on bringing Dutchess home in my lap as my hubby drives back home. I am also planning on stopping at any and all rest areas on the way too!!!

Congratulations on your new girl. When we brought Zak home we had his crate in the car, he was a bit fussy but then went to sleep. We did not have to stop since it was only a 2 hour ride.
One thing to think about if you stop is try and get out where there are not alot of people and dogs - don't go to the usual rest area dog spot. My vet had us do this when we traveled with a dog of ours that had cancer to keep her away from any germs.

our ride was 11 hrs back from PA to IL well worth it though
Mr fuzzball is exactly what was ordered:biggrin2:
Leo had his first shots series and while I am careful I am not that careful... as long as I stop and take my pup out not in somewhere not hugely popular area i.e. not designated for dogs we are fine.
Did not bother Mr Leo even a little he did have previous rides in the car but never been in a crate, went in right away and slept half of the way in one setting...
