Ear tipping

My vet suggested to glue small pebbles to the ears for weights, anyone else heard of this? I used hair extenstion glue and just tipped and glued using a method i found on a website and she ended up pulling the hair that was glued together out. I am kind of concerned if the pebbles come off will they fall into the ears. I was also told some use chewing gum as a weight. So just wanted to know if anyone has heard of these methods.

With my two Shelties I used sewing glue. It is non toxic (safe for the puppies) and works great! Their ears turned out great. Good luck

Unless your vet breeds or shows Shelties/Collies (we have one on the forum who does!), I'd take his/her advice on grooming, ears, etc. with a grain of salt. It's like asking a neurosurgeon for tips on how to style your hair - you've got the right geographical area, but the wrong specialist.I have heard of the chewing gum; never tried it. Frankly, it sounds like a nightmare to get out (ever gotten chewing gum in your hair?), and a little icky.
We use Japanese tape and yarn to brace ears. Others use Speed-Sew fabric glue to pull the ears together and over; it's not the method we use, but it's another "tried-and-true". I'd try Speed-Sew or Japanese tape, and leave the pebbles and chewing gum alone.

I just used the Japanese ear tape and it worked well. I did have some challenges with it (there's a learning curve!) but it worked out in the end.
I brought my puppy home at 12 weeks old and she had her ears taped until she was around 8 months. Usually they suggest taping until the dog is a year--but my girl's ears were looking a little heavy.

I have only used glue. I tried J. tape and braces once and it was a distaster in my hands. Weights I have heard from others doesn't generally works as it actually works in some cases to strenghen the cartiage of the ears not tip it. I don't know but people who have been in this game a lot longer then me have told me this.
What works best is if you have a mentor in the area to help you or the breeder of your pup for guidance. It can be a bit overwhelming regardless of method without hand on guidance.

Lol! Tofu Pup! When we got our first Sheltie 40 years ago, my parents were told chewing gum. It was the only time we were allowed to chew gum as kids
Now the choices are:
- Japanese Tape
- Old fashined bracing
- Gluing
i won't go into the particulars since there are multiple threads on this already. But I will say that gluing is easiest..but make sure you have an adhesive remover ready, like Detachol to be ready to unglue and reglue.

thanks for all the great response,, i think i will try the glue again! i really kind of hate to tip them in a way, her ears have the most beautiful marking! but the tip look is traditional from what i read. i had a sheltie about 25 years ago and her ears did not tip. so i would kind of like this one to have tipped ears.
