Ear Tipping

I truly share your pain!

Part of me just wants to give it up. Bacca was very upset last night when I tried to remove the messed up glue that I did on one ear. I may have moved him a step backwards in terms of being groomed as a result!

The other part of me wants to perservere.

Shetland Sheepmonster....Can you give more detail to your way of dealing with low ears? I'm having trouble visualizing the process. I would love to give up gluing because apparently I'm incompetent, but I can certainly apply 9and reapply) tape - I even have breathe-right strips at home already! Snoring Spouse! :lol:
 
Just an update on Indy's ears. I FINALLY got all the glue, tape, and matted hair off of Indy's ears. :uhoh: They are both standing straight up, as straight as arrows. :( Oh well, straight or tipped ears, he's a wonderful puppy and I love him to pieces! :biggrin2:
 
I still can't get all the glue off of Fred's ear tips. :( I tried the moleskin method, but one of them came undone so I took it all out. Now one of the inside of his ear is red and irritated. :( I decided to give up also lol.
 
Bacca's ears are reglued with enough Speed Sew to last a lifetime! He didn't particularly like it getting done, but it doesn't seem to bother him in the slightest now.

But people keep asking me why my pup has had surgery on his ears! :o

I ordered the book The Ultimate Guide to Sheltie Grooming. Can't wait for it to arrive! I'm so inept! I finally got my Peticure and my thinning shears and my bikini trimmer to get at the feet and ears but am afraid to try!
 
Kias ears are straight up .

I tried all that ear stuff and I finally decided whatever she was meant to have she will have. :rolleyes2: She is my baby not a show dog. So I decided to leave well enough alone.:lol: She still beautiful to me. As are all your furkids. But you have to decide for yourselves when to throw in the towel !!:lol: Best of luck to all of you and I hope you accomplish what you are aiming for.:cool:
 
Jake has had both ears unglued for about a week now (the first one came unstuck about 2 weeks ago), they are only slightly tipped do you think i should give it another go? He's only 4½ months :confused2:

BarbV, do you have the author of that book, might be worth me looking up as I would like to show Jake, I have a grooming DVD for Shelties but can never have too much info :lol:

It was written by Barbara Ross. I don't think its in print anymore so you have to pay abit of a premium for it. Someone (I don't remember who) recommended it to me, but it was on this forum.

My pup is just over 5 months now. He's ears came unglued about 1 month ago. I gave it a couple of weeks to see what they would do. His ears were going hound-like. Tipped low and spread out. I think I would have been happier with fully pricked ears!

Bottom line, if you are going to show, you are going to need to stay on top of the ears.

Somewhere I asked the question that if Sheltie ears need all this work to tip, why aren't pricked ears standard? I never got an answer!

So I've glued again. Poor pup! It doesn't seem to bother him but people keep asking me why he's had surgery on his ears! :sadsmile:

Spencer's breeder talked with me about tipping his ears but I decided that since he was :rolleyes2:my pet dog, I wasn't going to even attempt it. So he has very nice pricked ears and Spencer and I have yet to meet anyone who thinks he is any less handsome because his ears don't meet the standard.

Well, you just have! :yes:

I think that properly tipped ears can make or break a Sheltie's expression. Not saying that tipped ears are bad, but most that I see with prick or hound ears would be even cuter (or handsomer) with properly tipped ears. :wink2:

(I know that it isn't possible with all Shelties, though. My girl has pretty low-set, low tipping ears-after months of training them!)
