Eating Kleenex and Toilet Paper

Haley, my 10 year old sable sheltie, has a fondness for toilet paper and kleenex. I've even caught her sneaking Qtips out of the bathroom waste basket.

I'm very good about keeping the bathroom door closed most days, but alas, my son is not. Yesterday, she managed to pull a new roll of toilet paper off the small shelf in the bathroom. She shredded it, gnawed on it, chewed it, and swallowed at least 3/4 of the roll.

What is the fascination with toilet paper? Is it a vitamin deficiency? Is she lacking fiber?

Do your shelties share this issue?

Sca can suck the QTips out of a garbage can at 50 paces :eek2: he then goes back for kleenex. Thankfully he leaves the toilet paper alone. All my bathroom garbage cans are the kind you step on to open the lid.

Personally I think Its a fiber thing myself , nothing like a good kleenex to swab out the old digestive tract .:biggrin2:

But it definately seems to be a breed trait, as well as assisting in other general washroom duties,LOL

I figure they do it because they don't have opposable thumbs.

Think of it. Toilet paper. It's gotta be pretty tough to use without a good grasp. Eating it just sends it to do the work via the long route.

My 2 cents worth...

It's a doggie thing. I just hope she ate a small roll and not the Mega Roll that Charmin puts out! Lots and lots of fiber in that one! Q-tips, however, are really not good to eat......

I don't know if it's a sheltie thing. My former sheltie, Sassy, and the one I have now, Mya....have never ate toilet paper or q-tips.
The one thing I do know that's a sheltie trait (especially with my two) is that they like to shred toilet paper to tiny particles.
When Sassy was 6 months old...she took my waste basket ( I don't know how she managed this...I found it in the living room) took every shred of toilet paper and kleenex and had a big blast shredding that stuff to tiny miniscules. I came home to a house that looked like a dozen kids were living in it. ( I had no kids at that time).

Our shelties go for the empty toilet paper rolls if they can find them! Mikos has taken on a roll of paper towels when it was left within reach! I have a friend with a chihuahua cross that ended up at the vet in some distress with vomiting which turned out to be a temporary blockage from eating kleenex. They took in a stool sample and the vet showed them that the kleenex had compacted into hard chunks that were blocking things up. They were lucky and everything worked it's way out but they keep all their waste baskets covered now. I'm not sure if that is just an issue for small dogs but it was one more thing for me to keep out of sheltie reach! Now if we can just get him to stop chewing down the center of the shoelaces when someone leaves their shoes out!!

Mine never ate it, they made their sheltie artwork all over the floor and it was shreds of paper. Look at my artwork mom, pretty eh? I'm certain if mine ate it their butts would look like a fax machine.

Shoestrings, mine loved shoestrings, socks, and they would give my hubs undies a vent. The sheets they gave them a handle (big hole) to pull the sheets up when I would make the bed. They grew up and quit.

They do finally quit, its that stage.

Mine will eat anything...they are like mini goats...heck yesterday Six ate half a cardboard box that has been on my porch for a year...he must have decided yesterday it tasted good:lol:

The tasty treats here are newspaper, mail, and paper towels and any paper product...they are not allowed down to the bathrooms its gated off.

also the other day my mom went to give my aunt a magazine and the whole corner/edge was chewed off...thank god shes a dog person as well...she just laughed and took it!
