Edan sick again :(

Not impolite at all, Chris.

I haven't spoken to him since Tuesday when the test results came back. He wanted me to finish the Cerenia tablets before we tried anything else. We finished those yesterday.

My vet's office opens in about 3 minutes, I'll be on the phone by 8:01 AM with them to leave a message for the vet to call me.

I'm going to discuss with him the possibility of stomach ulcers, any additional tests that we may be able to do, etc.

I have had a few local Sheltie owners tell me their dogs have done the same thing to them for as much as 2 weeks. I'm pretty certain this is behavioral and not medical but dang it if I couldn't feel better if he'd eat something.

If I feel like I'm getting no where with my vet, my next stop is the new, state of the art, specialty and emergency center. If you have an actual appointment, you don't pay as much as an emergency appointment.

I tried some 'beef & mixed vegetable' baby food (it was all I could find with beef in it) and some sweet potato baby food (Edan loves sweet potatoes) and he physically recoiled from both.

We are considering trying scrambled eggs tonight when we get home.

If this keeps up, I'm going to pull him out of the August CPE trial. I can't run him in this state, it's dangerous.

Scrambled eggs is a great choice...sprinkle some garlic powder in it or on it...most dogs can't resist the flavor.

Also, for what it's worth, I find the chicken baby food is more appealing than the other kinds. I actually keep it in the house for tummy upsets.

I hope you get some answers today!

I'm sorry to read that Edan is still not eating, I can only imagine how upsetting this is. You just want to talk to him and tell him how sad and scared this is making you.

I hope you were able to talk to the vet this morning to get another plan of action in place.

Will he drink any chicken broth (unsalted)? I know you have tried everything, I'm just trying to come up with something new to try.

I have a special formula that I use when my babies (canine AND feline) won't eat. It came from my grandmother, who used it for non-thriving babies when she was a midwife in the mountains in the 30's and 40's.

Use chicken or turkey baby food, and mix it with a little milk (I substitute canine or feline milk replacer) - thin enough that you can use it in a medicine syringe, if you need to. A couple of tablespoons of corn syrup (the clear kind) helps if the animal is VERY weak.

I usually start feeding with a syringe - one small syringe full every couple of hours. I sometimes give water the same way. If no "command performances" occur (i.e. they don't throw it up), you can gradually tweak the mixture towards less corn syrup, then less milk replacer, then as the patient gets a little more interested, I mix the baby food with mashed up rice.

Don't keep anybody (human, canine, or feline) on this for more than a week, as it doesn't give them the all the nutrients they need to get well - it's just intended to get them over the very worse.

I've saved two of my dogs and six of my cats this way when they've stopped eating and I couldn't afford to take them to a vet.

Well, Edan is spending the next 24 - 48 hours at the Emergency Clinic. At least the new clinic has visiting hours; once a day we are allowed to visit. How long the visit can be depends on what they are there for.

Reason number one for his extended stay is he's dehydrated and they want to make sure they get enough fluid in him via IV to correct that problem.

They are going to re-run the blood work we did on Monday, even tough my vet faxed them the results, just in case something changed based on how he's been behaving toward food.

On basic examination, the doctor didn't like the feel of things down around his abdomen, liver, kidneys, etc. They will be doing an ultra sound and x-rays to take a look at things down there. I'm supposed to hear something on these tests before the end of the day. If I don't hear from them by 5 PM ET, I'm supposed to call.

I'm not happy about leaving him behind - in fact I spent the entire ride home trying to convince myself that its not my fault he's sick and I'm doing everything I can to fix him. That leaving him behind showed I cared and not that I was failing him. Yeah, I'm having a bit of a psychological war with myself currently.

I'll update once I hear from the doctor regarding the tests.

Those will be long hours for you till he is home. I pray that they find some thing to explain his not eating. I am sure it was a hard drive for you to make. The vet did not give you any idea of what he was feeling?
I am so glad you get to go visit him tomorrow.

Honestly, I was so upset on the way home I forget exactly what she described as the problem she felt down there. I figured I'd leave that information out rather than provide any false information.

I know she said it was rather 'squishy' (I think that's the word she used).

I just want my boy back happy and healthy - or on the way to healthy at least.

Leaving them is SO hard. Don't second guess yourself, if you can help it. Just know that he is in professional hands around the clock.

Lobbing up a prayer for the little guy, trusting that the fluids will make him feel better quickly, and sending positive thoughts your way.
