excessive barking ultra sonic bark collar

My almost 3 year old sheltie barks at everything. I have 3 shelties and I know they are known barkers but I never had one bark this much which also makes the others bark.

He barks when my husband gets up off the couch, people or dogs walking by the house, if my cats walk in the room, when the door opens, in the yard at everyone that walks buy. Its getting worse since we moved into our own house.

I've tried everything to get it down to a minimum but nothing has worked. He's always been a little fearful. I've had him at 8 weeks and I exposed him to everything but he never fully came around.

I wanted to try an ultra sonic bark collar has anyone used these? I don't want to shock him Im really against these and feel they can cause more damage to a dog.

The sonic collars use sound.

Any suggestions or input about the collars would be greatly appricated.

Don't waste your money!!
 
There was recently a long thread about changing behavior and barking.

I highly advise against them, especially in a multi-dog household. The other dogs quickly figure out that they can set it off, and you are going to compound your fear issues when that happens.
 
Thanks I will not be getting it. Yikes it burnt the poor dogs neck:( I think I'll try leashing and correcting that way see if that works.
 
If you are at the end of your wits debarking is an option. With good experienced vet it is low key safe procedure.
You will not resolve your dog's anxiety but it is different problem.
 
My old girl is debarked and I did have another I had done when I was living in my apartment many years ago. Only reason I had it done was because we faced eviction because of the barking.

I know my breeder does it on some of her dogs but I don't think I would do it again as annoying as he is sometimes.

Remote devices are NOT working for the most part and the damage you do to your dog's confidence is worse than any short term resolution you may think you're getting
 
Like others I'm not a fan of collars except in the most extreme cases where all else fails.

But there are two other ultra sonic devices you can consider. One is a remote trainer that YOU control as and when the dog is barking outside acceptable limits.

The other has both an indoor and outdoor version. It a unit that sits inside or outside the hour and is triggered by barking.

Again, people - these are ultra-sonic (i.e. like a silent whistle), not static (i.e. shock). I can't say for certain as to the effectiveness, but the vendor guarantees the product. So what's to loose?

I have tried many bark collars. The ultrasonic ones aren't entirely successful on their own. I have combined a vibrating collar with an outdoor unit and had much more success.

I used a vibrating collar with an ultrasonic sound. The vibration is more effective than the ultrasonic in distracting them from barking as its more irritating without being painful (it's like the vibration on your mobile phone). Having the vibration in conjunction with the ultrasonic sound teaches a negative association with the ultrasonic sound. So I was quickly able to switch from the collar to an outdoor ultrasonic unit. It's much easier than chasing a dog around to put the collar on and they can be left unsupervised with it. Since Deska has worn the vibrating collar he is much more responsive to the ultrasonic sound on the outdoor unit and will quieten down more quickly. In fact he now associates with outdoor unit with 'quiet time' and will automatically settle when its on.

I've had it for several years now and never had a poblem with it.

Btw - the chances of a battery operated ultrasonic collar burning a dog is very slim as they emit very little power. E-collars may be different.
