Eye concerns

I hope this section is ok to post this in. My vet has me slightly worried about Fox's eyes. She says they're small and there might be retinal issues. My highly reputable breeder assures me his eyes are fine and that they were tested. I am not worried about pointing fingers. I'm not into that; only concerned about my dog's sight. I will post a link to the pic of his right eye. Both are blue and rather cloudy, but his vision seems fine in both eyes. There is this strange dark sort of jagged patch at the top of his right eye, though. Please pardon the low quality. My dad still has my Nikon. Let me know what you think. I am a poor symphony musician and can't afford frivolous costly vet specialists unless I have very firm cause to believe it is necessary.

google merled eyes- merles can have blue eyes, brown eyes or a mix....
what the iris looks like doesn't match up with how well a dog can see.
I've had people ask me if my dog can see out of the blue eye- gotta wonder if they think that blue eyed people can't see either.............

Any chance your dog is a guide/service dog or involved in public service? If so, verterinary opthalmologists offer free exams once a year in May. According to the website "Service Animals including those provide the following services: guide, hearing assistance, drug detection, police/military, search and rescue, therapy, and those assisting people with disabilities other than blindness". Registration begins in April so not too far away. Here is a link to more info in case your dog would qualify: AVCO

You can see in this picture that Cleo has a merle eye. Her left eye in the corner is almost a very light blue color. We had her looked at several times thinking she may be blind or going blind in that eye. Finally one of the vets told me that is how her eye is because she is a merle and that there is nothing wrong with her. And she has never had a problem. I am not sure if this is what you are seeing as far as the dark jagged patch goes.

If the breeder had the eyes checked, s/he should be able to give you a copy of the paperwork - particularly if they were done by a veterinary ophthalmologist. The paperwork will tell you what the ophthalmologist saw, and will put your mind at ease.

There is something called a coloboma that can present as a "hole" in the iris. It is generally associated with merles and can co-occur with retina issues. However, this is something that would have been noticed at the puppy eye-check. Again, ask your breeder for a copy of the CERF form or other proof of passing eye exam.
