Eye drops

True's eyes are red and itchy from allergies. Does anyone know of any natural eyedrops that are safe to use on her??? I just am looking for something to help soothe her eyes. I took her in to the vet a few weeks ago and I am trying to avoid steriod shots or anything else with long term effects. I am trying other things that help out with her allergies (Thanks Janet)....but just need something to soothe her eyes. Thanks everyone :)
 
I've used natural tears on Romeo before. But that was just to wash out the eye tho. It doesn't have any medication or anything in it to help with allergies.
 
Verify with your vet that it is an allergy problem. If thats what the real problem is you could give your dog some Benedryl (1mg per lb) to help with the eye problem.

I don't see any k9 eye drops available to the public, and stuff like Visine is a NO-NO. Saline solution can be used to wash your dogs eye out but it won't have any long term effect on what is causing the irritation.
 
The vet did verify she has allergies. I took her in a while back and they gave her shot. It cleared it up but now its back. I am just trying to avoid another shot...if possible
 
Indy did very well with the local honey tsp per day for his skin allergies....the rash only cropped up during the summer and was completely unresponsive to any meds from the vet. Local honey was the key, gave him some immunity from the allergens in the grass and flowers. I don't remember giving it to him for very long before the rash cleared up and I haven't given it to him since.

Sasha's eyes rashed out this December after she drank from the Christmas tree water bowl...The vet gave us a cone of shame for her and some eye drops...prescription Neomyocin-Polymixin D with Dexamethasone in Opthamic solution. Her eyes looked TERRIBLE for over a week, and then completely cleared up.
 
You can use sterilised water drops. You could also make your own saline solution. For humans you add a heaped tsp per litre for eye drops, but I would only add about 1/2 tsp for dogs (in sterilised water). While it wont completely take away the allergy it will soothe the eyes and add extra moisture. You could also use a wet face washer over her eyes, or wipe a wet, cool cotton ball around the eyes to soothe the inflammation.

Most human antihistamines can be used on dogs for allergies. I use phenergan (a half to quarter dose) for Tully's allergies and only resort to the shots when she is really bad (eg at the start of spring). There are a few threads on the different antihistamines you can use, I believe quite a few people use benedryl.
 
Cucumber slices are always my first treatment for puffy, itchy eyes....If you can get True to let them there without eating them, LOL....
 
I'm sorry True has allergies. I hope she gets some relief soon. Poor girl. How is she doing? Are her UTI's under control?
