I have always had a really cheap comb from Petsmart--the metal one with wider teeth on one end, and narrower teeth on the other (like this). It has worked fine--I use it on the shelties when they are shedding (really loosens the undercoat) but mostly I use it to keep the ears mat-free.

I also use the comb on our maine coon cat (his fur is very silky but thick) and it pulls out so much hair--it's great.

But, I wanted to get a second comb and keep one for the cat and one for the dogs. I thought it would be a good opportunity to upgrade.

I went to the store and bought a comb that had all the same size teeth, and a handle (I hate that my hand starts to hurt after holding the all metal comb). I took it home and it DIDN'T WORK. It was the weirdest thing. It went straight through the cat's fur and the dogs' fur. The teeth were definitely not any wider than the wide tooth end of our current comb. I returned it--and now am not sure what to get!

So what do you recommend--what is the best comb/your favorite comb to use?
 
This is going to sound so goofy, but I use a plastic pocket comb with a handle. It works great and is much easier to hold than the metal greyhound comb. Sally doesn't mind it and it gets out as much undercoat as a rake but doesn't seem to pull as much. I have no idea why I even thought to use it but it works for us !! :confused2:
 
I have to say my all time fav comb I got from Eukanuba as a freebee...Ive had it prob 10 years now and its my go to...I can strip out dead undercoat for hours and my hand doesnt hurt... too bad:lol:. I have looked at the CC greyhound combs and you can buy the wooden handle...but since I still have the one I love so much I keep on putting off trying it!

That's what I use on occasion too:o. It works fine, I don't see any sense in changing anything. But it all depends on what works for your dog. Plastic is just fine for us:wink2:!

Strips out unbelieveable amounts of undercoat with unduly rubbing, scratching or damaging guardhairs.

Greyhound comb works nicely too, however SM beats it by miles.

Couple of good youtube video's, although the Manf's really does itself a dis-service by coming off as typical As Seen On TV type cheesy advert. The other one from 2013 News Station is good, although I pull a heck of a lot more off Boots.

I was at a specialty pet store and the grooming was saying to two best tools is a special teflon rake and a teflon comb. She swears by them for shelties, prevents tugging and glides and helps with keeping mats away.
 
I can't use a comb on Lil' Lady, I use a rake and love it.

Duluth carried mine, and now I can't find it on their site.

The one that I have, it has a nice rubber handle and the teeth goes for depth.

Google Dog Grooming Rake they do show a variety if you decide to go for one.
One thing they aren't that expensive but great to use.

I have a rake that has a wood handle and teflon comb that I use for shedding. It's the best thing I've ever found for taking out undercoat and thatch. It doesn't drag or pull and the dogs don't mind it. I got it years ago and have no idea where I found it but I love it.

I use my greyhound combs after I've been over the coat with the rake for fine-tuning.
 
The comb I have has those rotating teeth. I got it off Amazon, brand is Bamboo. When I tried to pull it up, it looks like they have a new version and it's not available. I really like it, it seems to do a good job at pulling out undercoat. I also have a little bitty comb for ears. I was very nervous about the rotating teeth on the comb because I had never seen a comb like that. It really hasn't been a problem, but I will probably need a better, non-rotating teeth comb pretty soon because I'm expecting Missy's coat to come in this Fall/Winter.
 
I don't really use my comb often. My favourite tools are rake, slicker and pin brush. I sometimes use the comebon mats, but I'm fortunanate that my boys don't matt often.

If I ever were to replace my comb, it would be with a greyhound comb....but that seems like what you already have.
