FDA releases report on Diamond Plant

I am a firm believer that the larger and well known dog food companies have done the necessary research and take the required precautions to produce safe and uncontaminated food. I also believe that you get what you pay for....companies like purina, science diet, pedigree, and eukanuba have been around a long time and they have proven their quality...yes, they are more expensive, but peace of mind is worth a whole lot to me.

The two previous posters are absolutely correct. The ingredients in the foods you mentioned include dreadful ingredients: by-products, corn, gluten etc. True quality foods don't include waste products or fillers like these, and as a result, you feed your dogs much less than you have to of those low-quality brands. I urge you to familiarize yourself with the ingredients in the foods you mentioned. They are as far from "quality" as you can get.

You do realize those brands you listed killed thousands of dogs in 2007 with melamine? They also killed pets with aflatoxin. Purina just killed six cats last month because they left thiamin out of their prescription canned food. Maybe you should ask the pet owners whose pet died, about how quality their food is.

I would really research what you're saying. Go and look at their constant recalls. There are 4D animals in those brands --down, diseased, dying or dead. There are dead zoo animals in those brands you mentioned. There is "animal fat" which could easily be euthanized animal fat. They've tested those brands and found high amount of the drug used to euthanize animals... every year animal shelters send thousands and thousands of dogs off to be rendered into animal food. Not good. Trust me.

Remember, a dog is a carnivore and can't digest corn or gluten. Those ingredients in those low quality brands are fillers and don't add any nutritional value and also tax the entire body, especially, the pancreas because a dog isn't meant to eat things other than meat. They can't digest it easily. The extra pressure on the organs to digest something unnatural lowers the immune system. Then you get immune compromised dogs. Then you get all the immune compromised diseases.

Rivendell-
Sorry for the smackdown. There is nothing wrong with what you posted.
Hang around here and you will learn to get used to it.

The only problem with what you said is that purina, pedigree, etc. are all crap food for dogs, if you look at the ingredient lists. yes, they have been around forever, and yes, our parents fed our dogs these foods.

And actually the foods being recalled are actually more expensive then the brands you mentioned.

I don't know what the answer is. At first, I was pretty confident in Diamond doing all the right things to fix this problem. But the internet is pretty viral and spreads all kinds of truths and untruths, so that you don't really know what is real anymore.

All I can say is that I think Diamond will be doing its best to resolve any issues they have. How could they not? Otherwise, they will be quickly out of business.

And I do believe that the actually risk of any of these products is at neglible. I had customers return bags that that were on the recall list but had been feeding their cat/dog for weeks on the food.

Here's my question to you.

How can Diamond "fix" this issue? After they killed many animals with aflatoxins, you'd think they would have learned their lesson right? So what makes it different this time? I'm not sure there's anything to correct this situation. I mean, they lied about testing their food after they killed pets in the past. This time we're supposed to trust them? Really think about it. A company killed pets with a fungus and lost billions of dollars, then seven years later gets in trouble with the FDA for unhealthy standards/not testing foods. If they didn't learn the first time, what makes this time different?

The problem is these companies are too big, producing too much, and can't stay on top of it. People would fair best staying away from big brands and searching out the smaller ones. As they grow, reconsider the food.

Menu foods produces most store bought foods (purina/pedigree/etc and Nutro. That manufacturer has killed more dogs than Diamond so I'd definitely stay away from them. They killed thousands of pets in 2007.

How are we supposed to trust these people again? this is serious stuff. I mean they are killing animals! Think how mad you'd be if this was your dog who died or your loved one who was sick in the hospital.

I don't think I will buy a Diamond product again. Purina and the likes are a lower quality corn based food with questionable protein sources. I wondered where the euthanized animals went. :ick

Makes you wonder. I actually just read an article stating every day millions of pounds are shipped to rendering plants. Here's an interview with the president of the AAFCO talking about "fluffy" being in your food.

http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-industry-exposed/euthanized-pets-dog-food/

Someone in the comments mentioned rendered pets also being used in soaps! The dog food is scary because my mom, for example, had to put her dog to sleep for CANCER. I'm not really fond of the idea of my dog eating another dog with CANCER. She had a tumor in her throat...I don't want to feed my pups tumor ridden animals!

Did anyone else notice it's odd they had animal fat/animal digest in their plant... but none of their brands list this? Another forum I go to, a person posted all the ingredients of each Diamond Brand and none mention animal fat/animal digest..... odd?

What do you think? In case you're not clear, open ended descriptions of non-animal, just animal, leave the door open to 4D/euthanized/zoo animals in the food!

Right.
After all, who would want to risk eating foods spoiled by bacterial contamination... by buying foods from a plant where there are nicks in the conveyor belt where residue might collect.
Instead, play it safe- throw some dead chickens in the back yard and let your dogs 'snack'on it for a week while they rot.
That way you can avoid those nasty bacteria.

Is that actually the argument we are making here??
I know, I'm once again disturbing the decorum of this friendly site. But someone has to stand up to this stuff....

Sorry, but aflatoxin and melamine aren't going to be in my dog's raw chicken. Nope. No way.

The salmonella is mostly a concern for humans. Granted, dogs can get it, my dogs don't have a weak immune system so I know it's okay to feed them raw meat. Whereas someone like Chandler's owner whose dog wasn't well enough and she wouldn't have given him something like that had she known, are the ones who suffer. Or what about the other poster on here whose dog got ill from TOTW and she was out of pocket for the expenses? Maybe her dog had the flu or something the day he ate contaminated kibble, and his gut flora isn't use to such things like a raw dog would be, and now she's out money and her dogs sick. Not OKAY.

Also, I'm okay with taking the risks that come along with raw feeding. Someone who is buying kibble might not be okay, and therefor, they deserved a food that's guaranteed to be salmonella-free. What if they have HIV and they're not aware of the possibility of salmonella being in the foods because they thought it was being tested? Also I understand when I cut up chicken, I need to sanitize. Whereas someone who is scooping kibble, probably doesn't feel the need to take the same precautions. The bottom line is this company claims to test their foods and be free of such things, whereas me feeding raw chicken, understand the risks.

How can you defend a company that killed thousands of animals over a mold in their corn and then decides to stop testing the food? Tell me again, how this is okay? False marketing is okay? It's okay for them to lie about their ingredients and lie about their testing? Interesting someone who claims to be a vet would stand up for a company that makes animals sick/dead and now humans sick.... hmmmm....

Bottom line, if a company is promising to test their food and have a clean facility, they should follow through on that promise. They shouldn't be able to lie about testing and lie about things being sanitary.

Let's not turn this into yet another discussion of raw vs. commercial. This thread is not about that topic, which has been done to death in other threads and you are welcome to resurrect it there. Please keep this on topic.
