Feeding

Just curious about other shelties feeding schedules. Also much food do you feed? Do you feed once or twice a daily?

Until Emma was about 11 months, she got fed three times a day. Now she and Liam are fed twice a day, 1/3 cup per meal for Emma, 1/2 cup for Liam as he is much more active (he thinks he is a cat), as well as frozen green beans and a teaspoon of cooked pumpkin or squash each meal. They also get three little biscuits a day (on coffee break and bedtime snack schedule that Dad has not been able to break himself of even though he is 84!). If Dad is well enough to get out to church on Sunday mornings, then they get a kong filled with peanut butter. Every bite they get is included in their daily food total. Hamish and Noah loved all manner of fruits and vegetables, which they would be given.

I feed twice a day. usually around 8am and than at 6:30-7pm.

How much they get depends on what they are getting, they type of food and quality, and how active they are on burning it off.

I agree with Linda...the amount of food totally depends on the dog's size, activity level, etc...

Here are mine:

Bentley is 15.75" tall and 19 lbs. He is a couch potato, but does do agility about 5 times a week. He gets 1/3 C twice a day (plus some treats at agility).

Lexi is 15.75" tall too, but 14 lbs. She is extremely active. She gets walked a lot, plays a lot, and does agility 5 times a week. She gets just under 1/2 C twice a day (plus treats).

Bella and Dodger both eat twice a day and amount varys somewhere between < 1/2> cup at each meal + training treats, and believe me they know when meal time is.. if i am busy and forget they will come stand in front of me tapping their foot..

My boys are both a year old now and they both eat in the morning and again late afternoon. They eat about 1/2 heaping cup of food which each meal. They eat Blue Buffalo. the amount fed may depend on what you are feeding.

Hi and welcome
Sandstorm gets 1 1/2 cups of blue buffalo once a day. He gets 2 biscuits in the a.m. and two in the afternoon, we feed him his blue buffalo at 5:30. I just cut his food from 2 cups per day to roughly 1 1/2- he seemed to have gained a couple of pounds, so we cut his food. Sandstorm is 18 inches and (I hope) 32 lbs, at least he was at the last vet visit a few months ago!

Mine get feed twice a day and Maggie gets 1/2 cup and Zak is a bit over a that amount. They get the treat ball with a few kibble's and that last for a day some days they get them all out and some not. On days that I am home at noon they get a teaspoon of fat free yogurt with a dab of honey, and fruit. Sometimes a dab a little dab of peanutbutter mixed with it.
I feed them at 6:30 in the morning and bit later on the weekends and dinner is between 4:30 and 5:00. When dinner time comes they let me know.
Once a week they get an egg added or homemade food or lately I have chicken heart and liver added to it.

Everyone gets fed 2x a day here. 7am-5pm. We feed TOTW.Occasionally we will offer Merrick's canned,to all 3 shelties.Everyone gets the recommended amount of Salmon oil added to thier food.

Jasper & Trapp weigh the same, both 20#.Although Jasper is smaller,he is the energizer bunny. He never stops, till bedtime. He is on a mission every day to rid this yard of squirrels!

Trapp is closer to 16",where as Jasper has shrunk since his first birthday, and is much leaner. He measures right at 14-3/4,so very close to 15.But does not look it.
Both of them are fed 3/4c~ 2x a day. Mia is 14#,and is fed just 1/2c~2x a day.Her height is pretty close to 14".We have cut her back, since her spay some time ago,she was getting to pudgy.

Every dog is differant,as everyone mentioned. So requirements are not the same, and set in stone.

While my two have roughly the same amount of food for meals, what they eat between meals varies according to their activity levels.

Mine are fed twice a day. They get 1/8 cup kibble whenever i get up, in hot weather they may get a small bone to gnaw on instead of kibble. Dinner is early evening and will fit around walks and training times. I cook for them most evenings - about 100-120g of mince and either Vets All Natural (a premix) or vegies. If I cant be bothered cooking they get 1/2 small can each.

I give them a few treats if we walk to the oval or at training. During cooler months we do a lot of bushwalking so I will give them a bone or rawhide during the day. When we have flyball comps they get a mostly meat dinner the night before and meat for breakfast (usually I buy a roast chicken from the supermarket).

Tully is 6.4kg and Deska 11.6kg but they get roughly the same amount for meals because Tully is very, very active, plus Deska tends to get more treats between meals because he trains better with treats.
