feel like a failure

I have a sheltie that was over weight. All he wanted to do was sleep. I was only feeding him 1.5 cup of food a day and he went from 25 lbs to 34 it seemed like overnight. The vet did blood work and put him on thyroid meds for hypo -thyroidism and he is about 30 lbs now. He also is more playful and is very active on walks. I Dont think you are a bad parent. Good luck!

How tall is your sheltie? That's a lot of food IMO. My biggest 16 1/2" only gets a cup a day and my smallest 14.25" gets 1/2 cup a day.

My male is 18 inches and female is 17 1/2 inches. The vet says he is at a healthy wieght but my female is as my husband, Fluffy not fat. They eat a grain free diet and get very little treats except I feed them popcorn when I watch tv sometimes. My male has alot of allergies so I dont give alot of extras. They luv popcorn night...it tastes good and is fun for them to catch ..
Do you think I need to cut back? If I am over feeding let me know...I am always up for suggestions:smile2: I luv my furry little babies!:smile2:

My shelties are 30 lbs for the male and my female is 33 lbs. my male looked fat at 34 lbs. He looks just right at 30 lbs. My female is alittle fluffy. but when I had her spayed the vet didnt act like she was over weight. Yes, my dogs are on the big side. If I didnt know better they were part collie, But have their akc papers. They are definitely larger than the sheltie I had as a child. She was very small, Id say about 20 lbs maybe. When people see my Shelties they think they are collies:mad: nothing against collies but They are Shelties:smile2:I luv my shelties:biggrin2: Does anyone else have Big Shelties? Also how do you measure yours? Maybe I didnt do it right...but I dont think I an far off:confused2:

Given their height, I don't think their weight is WAY over the top, though I think they could both stand to lose about 5 lbs each. You also need to consider their skeleton and muscles.

Bacca and Indy are both about the same height but Bacca is a good deal heavier...he's longer in body and generally more heavy boned.

1.5 cups is definitely too much. I would cut back to 1 to 1 1/3 max. And keep trying to get him to exercise. Maybe one of those cooling jackets (in another post) will get him more interested in the heat of the summer.

Good luck!

After reading all the info in this post I have cut down on the kids food. They sure give me the sad eyes:sadsmile::sadsmile: at meal time. We will be getting more exercise. Thanks for all your ideas. I want them to be healthy.:smile2: Right now they kinda look like they are part bulldog only much more cute!
