Finding A Reputable Canadian Breeder?

Hello,
As this is my first post I am very excited! :smile2:
I have been reading through all these stories and information about shelties and its just getting me more excited about getting one this summer!
I have talked to a few breeders through:

in southern Ontario. Is this a site that contains reputable breeders, or those that just pay to get an advertisement in?
If a breeder is a CSSA member for Ontario, what does that mean for them as a breeder? Do they have specific champions, qualifications or do they have to maintain a certain standard in the pups? :confused2:

I did a quick checked of the site you listed and saw several names that I recognize as excellent breeders. There are members here that have some of their dogs. I'm sure some of our Canadian members will jump in and offer some advice.

I'll be looking forward to hearing about you search for you new family member.
 
Welcome to the forums. I'm from southern Ontario as well.

Any breeder who is a member of the CSSA is going to do their best to live up to the breed standards. I recognize some of the names from this site, as I looked on it when I was looking at getting Emma. There are many more breeders though not listed on this site but on the CSSA site. I am not sure where you are located in Ontario but I can PM you some names.

Emma I got from a breeder near Port Rowan and about 11 months later got Liam from her.
 
Welcome to the forun and I just have to ask, why are you waiting for summe? I am sure the Canada ladies can direct you of where to look for one.

It sounds like you are getting some great advice on where to go to find your perfect new puppy.

Welcome to the forums, I'm from Southern Ontario too.

My guess would be that those breeders pay to advertise on that web site, but its probably required that they be members of the CSSA as well.

Two of my shelties are out of one those kennel being advertised. I can tell you that they have an excellent reputation and the owner of the kennel is also a herding group judge. Feel free to PM me if you'd like to know more. :smile2:
 
While they pay to advertise (like Dogs in Canada) it's a good starting point to start the search - at least to start getting some names.

It's also not totally inclusive....for instance, one of the best breeders in Nova Scotia, is not even listed.

When I was searching I started with a couple of great breeders that I knew about and then went by word of mouth and references from them. It's a close knit crowd.

Use your local Sheltie association, and visit the dog shows. You'll start seeing the same names crop up over and over again.

The website is great for researching breeders as well. Stay away from Kiijjii and Craig's List. Occasionally you will find a good breeder listing an older dog there, but puppies? Never!

One thing to keep in mind....A breeder doesn't have to be in business for 30 years to be good. I finally found Bacca from a new breeder. This was one of her first litters. But she co-bred with a known line, so I knew she had a good mentor. Bacca's brothers and sisters, and now nieces and nephews are all going champion.
 
good luck with getting a puppy! I am actually breeding my girl to one of Crinan's boys! I recognise many of them so I hope you find the right one!!
