First Ingredients in dog food

I'm still looking for the best veterinary prescription diet food for my Randy. Purina OM starts with: Whole grain corn, corn gluten meal, & soybean hulls. Another food I've looked at is Royal Canin Vet Diet CC High Fiber which starts with Chicken Meal, corn, and cellulose fiber.

Any thoughts?

Why do you want a prescription veterinary diet food? Why not just feed a good quality food in the appropriate amounts for weight loss? All of the "veterinary" foods are going to be very high in grains, not conducive to weight loss. A good quality, healthy food fed in smaller quantities and coupled with exercise will give you the weight loss you are looking for.

If you really insist on feeding a "vet" diet, then go for the Royal Canin. At least there is a shred of meat in that one. Still not good ingredients though.

If you are willing to stray away from the "vet" foods, there are some good quality "weight loss" or "low fat" foods out there. Innova Reduced Fat, Wellness Core Reduced Fat, for starters.

But really, if you go to your human doctor and you are a little bit over weight, what do you think your doctor is going to recommend? High quality, fresh, natural ingredients in smaller quantities, cut out the junk food, and increasing your exercise regiment. Not some artificial weight loss diet, or fad diet program.

Listen if there is no medical reason other than weight loss, GeeRome has it right on the button. You'll just be paying through the nose when you can get a very high quality food from a pet or feed and grain store. They even sell high quality food on-line ! As long as the main ingredients are Chicken, not chicken by-products; beef, not by-products you get the idea. some great ones are, Wellness core, Merricks, Abundance, Halo, many more but that gives you an idea ok. Save the money for the more important things like vet bills !!:uhoh:

on another board im on we discuss dog food ALOT! It seems to be a hot topic this is a link to it, one of the posters actually listed the ingrediants in every brand (very Time consuming) but its a wealth of infomation all in one place. I would not do vet prescription food if not needed its over priced with garbage ingrediants they push it because science diet actually pays them and pays some of the schooling. Its full of fillers! The only science diet I would feed is Science diet A/d its for weight gain in very sick animals and works well. http://forums.ebay.com/db1/topic/Animals/Dogfoodwhats-In-It/2000485263

Here is another link that lists all the higher quality dog foods that I use for research as well (its put together a bit better) http://www.dogaware.com/dogfeeding.html

Randy can just look at food and gain weight! When I stopped him on the Purina OM we changed to Nutro Ultra Weight Management, getting two cups a day. I know he gets some small treats, but he's gained over three pounds since starting the Nutro in late November. It's not that we've not tried the more holistic type foods, it's just that for him they don't work.

Don't confuse holistic with quality. Quite a few of the so-called holistic foods are garbage too.

how much does he weigh?? I have a 35 pound sheltie, normal weight, that according to the bag should get 2 cups of food and that is way too much for her! she gains weight on that amount so she gets any where between 1 cup to 1 1/2 cup of food, and she stays a good weight. Now my younger intact sheltie (18 pounds) is pretty active so before I switched her to a raw diet she was eating 1 cup to maintain her weight

2c a day? How much does he weigh? Ive also found that weight loss food doesnt work for mine. Its about portion control and what they are eating...just like people. Mine usually gain about 2 lbs in the winter because I feed them a bit more because its cold here and they are out and they are not getting the exercise they do in the summer (no beach when its frozen:smile2: ) also instead of treats use green beans/carrots. green beans are a freebe no calories for them

2 cups a day is much too much food. When Gio was on kibble he was getting 1.5 cups per day, he is 19.5 inches tall and weighs ~45lb. Plus, at the time, he was at the peak of his flyball career, perfect physical condition and loads of hard core strenuous exercise.

Switch to a high quality food (various ones have already been mentioned here, or check out www.dogfoodanalysis.com for more options), cut down the portions, cut out the treats, and increase the exercise.
