Hello from Central Alaska, my wife and I are longtime Sheltie owners, Gracee is a fun loving 15 1/2 year old Tricolor/Eskimo though she looks all Sheltie. We plan on getting at least one more Sheltie before long, looking into adopting a retired girl (5 years) from an awesome breeder locally. Then, a puppy I think.

Looking forward to spending some time on the forum!

I have an uncle who has a fish camp in Soldotna and I have to tell you that Alaska is pretty much my favorite place on earth....during the summer that is :wink2:

Thanks for joining us, and I look forward to hearing more about you and your new sheltie when you get one! Also to hear more about your 15 1/2 year old pup....that is an amazing age to still have your dog. Congrats on that.

Welcome! I honeymooned in Alaska in May last year and had an AWESOME time. Didn't manage to travel quite so far as Fairbanks but saw much travelling in an RV from Denali all the way down to Homer Spit! The only thing that would have made the trip even better was to have seen a couple of shelties along the way! :lol:

Yes we have a popular destination here! All the new Alaska TV shows help I think. I would post a photo or two, but so far I do not see the option to add attachments, I'll look into it more. Same with an avatar.

Our Sheltie is named Gracee, and at 15 1/2 she is mostly deaf, and the vet says she has Kidney disease. She also has mild epilepsy, since about 3 years old. A year ago we started cooking her food at home and she is thriving. We have a boat, and catch a lot of Salmon in the summer guess what is in her food! That and ground Turkey, certain grains, dried veggies, etc. She makes it up 2 flights of stairs no problem, she still barks to go outside, has no trouble with accidents, and charms all who meet her.

That mix sounds incredibly cute! I can't wait to see pictures of her. That's awesome that you guys are thinking of adopting. The good thing is that shelties live a long time compared to other dogs so 5 years is nothing.

I will post some photos of Gracee when the option is available, it it turned off now. We acquired her from a less than reputable breeder (term used loosely) we were looking for a Sheltie way back then, and these folks bred them and Eskimos.

When we took her with us to visit with our local breeder last week and their Sheltie we are looking to adopt, they could not really see any Eskimo in her so who knows?. She blended in so well with their other dogs who were in the house that day we had to do a double take a couple times to pick her out.

This time around we are doing it much differently, we won't enable a non-legit breeder by buying a dog from them, we're going to stick with purebred Shelties from a good breeder.

Our last dog lived to over 17 years, a Husky/Shepherd female named Gypsy. It was her rear legs (hips) that finally quit working that forced us to make a hard choice. She was adopted in front of a grocery store, a family had puppies in a box they were giving away!
