Fishy breath

I have researched on the Internet so much on fishy breath for dogs. My sheltie has fishy breath but doesn't have fish in his food, I don't think it's his anal glands which seems to be number two and I brush his teeth so doubt it's his breath. He's so healthy, but I guess now I should ask the vet. I don't want to panic since I had a previous 3 yr old with a cancerous chest mass but wondered if this was normal.
 
Is he licking his anal glands ? Licking them, if they are full can cause them to leak and that could be causing the fishy odor to come from his mouth...are you sure mouth is ok ? Any drooling or head tilting when chewing ? Pockets on the gums or swelling ? acting ok ?
 
That does seem odd. Could be a digestive issue? I wonder if you tried another food if it would make a difference.

I would probably mention it to the vet and see what they thought.
 
I brush my dogs' teeth but they still get stinky breath. I find the only way to keep the stink away is bones to chew on.
 
Hi.. I'm new here and this is my first post..2 of my 3 Shelties have "fishy" breath but no fish in their diet. When it's warm out they lick their paws and sometimes get "pink" paw. My vet said it's a kind of allergy and when they lick their paw, it causes them to have stinky breath. I do notice their breath is fine in the warmer months. The vet said just to give them Benadryl for the allergy and thus this will deter them from licking. Just a thought that it might be this.
 
I agree with corbinam...in my experience, fishy breath is usually caused by the food they're eating if they don't have a dental or medical problem. You might try switching food, or add some fresh parsley to their diet. That can help with digestion and fish breath.
