Flea and Tick dips... nervous!

So my poor little man has some fleas... i wanted to take him to get a flea and tick dip but i'm terrified because i remember seeing posts on here about shelties being super sensitive and actually having seizures with some flea and tick treatments... what to do!!!
 
why does he have to be dipped? I would find a puppy safe shampoo and use that instead. I would not want to dip a puppy.
 
hes not really a pup anymore... hes just small so i call him that.. hes almost 2.. and i was hoping the dip would last a bit longer so i wouldnt have to worry about getting them again for a lil.. or do you recomend a topical, and if so which brand/? haha i'm so nervous!
 
Stay as far away from the dips as you can, there is no need. If your dog has fleas, so does your house. So as soon as the dip wears off, they will be back on him. You have to treat the house too.

We had fleas introduced to our house last year, causing a light infestation.

What finally did it:

1. Gave Cap-Star to all the dogs, and bathed them in neem shampoo. Then removed them from the house.
2. Bombed the house.
3. Bombed again ten days later.

I had been probably four months with daily brushing and vacuuming, and never could get rid of the fleas. I even used topical poisons, the fleas walked all over it. My vet told me since I got rid of them in winter, I would probably see them again when it warmed up, which so far has not happened (fingers crossed).

I was going to suggest capstar. :yes: Never tried it myself, but my friend uses it before dog shows.

Another thing is my current vet told me that he disliked dips (flea and mange dips) because they are old school. He said it's a very toxic and out of date way to deal with a problem when there are better, safer solutions out there now.
 
wash your dog beddings and all his towels etc at least every week, find hypo allergenic shampoo and give your dog bath just about every 2 -3 days for a weekor 2, attempt to wash and soap their head first and then entire body, lots of fleas will be killed/ removed by regular washing/bathing alone...if it is light infestation that is all needed...
 
Ark Naturals makes good flea shampoos that are not harsh. I had another brand in mind but the name I can't remember right now.
 
The NaturVet Holistic flea and tick spray that I use on Snickers can also be sprayed on carpets,curtains,etc...etc...Your house will smell like cedar for a few hours but I think it is better than using a chemical bomb in your house.Snickers had a few fleas on him and I sprayed him down and havent found a flea since ( knock on wood)... so I am hoping it will continue to work.
(just a thought for all the other chemically scared folks like me :smile2:)
 
Why do a dip?

I think a good bath,in some good quality flea shampoo,and then once dry,give a dose of a good topical treatment of flea meds.
There are many out there,ask your vet what they sell,or even go with a natural holistic type. I think most pet stores sell them.

I don't think the dog needs dipping,just monthly maintenance.Although I will add,since you know he has fleas,then they are in your home as well.

It's scary how many flea eggs hatch a day.So a good cleaning with very hot water to all bedding,curtains etc,and also a deep steam clean of your carpets.You have to stop the cycle of fleas in your home.
