Found my dog... now how do I get him?!

Thanks for all your input!
The shelter said they would not adopt out to anyone that they couldn't do a follow up visit for :-( I mentioned the local shelter.
They just said you seem like wonderful people, but NO.
I'm happy that they are strict when placing their dogs but not happy that it's making it impossible to bring him home.

Thanks again for your help! Any one in the NY area should be jumping to get this handsome man!

The 'Friendly' response I received :-(

Hi Sande,

I see that Sammy is still available.
I got some advice from a Sheltie forum. They said that perhaps you would
accept a phone call from a local rescue after doing a home visit upon
Sammy's arrival?
Please do consider if you're having a hard time placing him!

Thanks again,

Hi

I live in Ottawa as well with my two Sheltie boys, Indy and Bacca. When Bacca was about 9 months old, I decided that he needed a buddy.

Like you, I searched for Sheltie rescues in the area and came up with nothing. The closest I found were in the Toronto/Southern Ontario region. I was prepared to make the drive too, but at the time was having no luck.

As a result, I ended buying Indy from a local breeder. He was also 9 months old at the time. He was bred for show, but did not work out. It ended up being a very good fit.

That being said, with the recent raid at the Quebec puppy mill, you might be able to find a Sheltie or Sheltie-mix in the dogs rescued there. I'm not sure where they are being held.

I would start with the SPCA in Aylmer. I have heard nothing but good things about them. I don't think they are holding any of those dogs, but might now how to reach them.

Meet Lucas, a 16 week old Collie from the Aylmer SPCA

p.s. So glad to see more Ottawa folk joining! Pretty soon we'll have enough to have our own Eastern Ontario Sheltie Gathering! :smile2:

Thanks again,

I'm so sorry that you had this experience. This kind of behavior (rudeness, curtness, the "we-have-what-you-want-so-we-have-leverage") attitude does nothing to help rescued animals find loving homes. (It also sure doesn't make the rescue look good to other potential adopters!)

Their curt attitude angers me. Just because you are out of the area doesn't mean you are not the best home for the little guy. I think rescues should use alternative ways to perform home visits, etc. It certainly worked out for Lottie and me!

been there done that. No wonder some rescues post their dogs for YEARS on their websites... really? there is no one in years good enough to make pup a home? and those are not dogs with special needs or seniors that are so hard to place...
