Fromm Foods - Simply the Best?

Howdy Folks,

It's been a while since I've been on here, and all has been good for us and Remy. He's still crazy but he shows some slight improvement in various behavioral moments that give us hope that he might calm down at some point. Regardless, he is over-loved every day by all members of the family even when he's been naughty - which is multiple times throughout the day :)

Previously, I had lengthy research and discussions with people in here about diet and appropriate foods for our little (48lb) Sheltie. We settled on Fromm Adult food (black bag) and he did great on it and then I've switched him now to Fromm Ancient Grains which is basically just sorghum as substitute ingredient. He's done fantastic on it since the full switch and I haven't looked back. Of course, today I see that Fromm had a voluntary recall on some of their canned dogfood brands:

I don't see any reason to be alarmed by this but I might be naive in this regard. Would love to hear your thoughts on the subject if you have the time.

PS - Fromm has a new Whitefish food that has small kibble which we use as treats/training to help change up his diet. He loves it and we've liked that food as well.
 
All this recall crap is disheartening. Not sure what to tell you, the canned food may be made in a totally different factory than the kibble. For sure I would keep an eye out for any other recalls, sometimes it starts with one thing and then expands.
 
I agree with Sharon 7, Right now it's just the can food. So it's a good idea to keep an eye on this and see were this goes. And if the recall gets expanded to their other products

Also if we're looking for positives, it was high vitamin D which is an additive and still dangerous for our dogs in the wrong amounts,but was not bacterial or mold in nature
 
I’ve been feeding Fromm Four Star (dry) for a few years and my dog has done well on it. This is not the first recall they’ve had for canned recipes somewhat recently. They had a recall in 2016 for the same thing- high levels of vitamin D. I’m not switching immediately or anything. I had actually planned to include some additional brands in my rotation and purchased a few bags a month ago. So after she finishes the bags of Fromm I have left and the bags of new food, I’ll see where things are. That will be 5-6 months I think.

One thing that will make me switch immediately and not look back is reading reports on the facility from the FDA. The one on Diamond/Taste of the Wild from 2012ish… I might be exaggerating but I remember being extremely grossed out.
 
I'm still a happy camper with Fromm. I've found when I have questions about stuff, I can always get a human on the phone who answers my questions and the responses seem logical, rational. I did go on their site, the recall notice is there, it was their own company that found the problem, initiated the recall which makes me feel better - wasn't like some dogs died, gov't got involved, found an issue from months ago and initiated a recall long after folks were feeding their dogs with whatever was recalled - they are policing themselves. Would be more helpful if they did the testing prior to releasing batches, but I till think their track record is good. Not switching.
 
I pulled up the FDA inspection website where you can search for inspections and citations for the past 10 years. Fromm didn't have any citations, or warning letters, or anything like that. But it also didn't list any recalls.. when we know there have been at least 2. Maybe it's because they are voluntary recalls? Not sure. But that does make me feel a little better.
 
I did a lot of investigation into which food would be our best choice. After extensive research, including recall research, we thought Fromm would be the best choice. While I was researching their products, I spoke with people at Fromm a couple of times. There isn't anything I don't like about them. This was their own catch and voluntary recall and it's not like something gross or horrendous. The recall wasn't of the product that we purchase and I feel comfortable that we don't have to do anything. And like I said above, Remy is doing great on the Fromm's Ancient Grains so we're going to stick with it.
