I have a 9 month sable sheltie pup and I was wonderin gby what age should he have his full "Sheltie Fur". He has some of his mane, but not nearly impressive as I have seen in pictures. Also the fur onto his back is not as long as I have seen in pictures. I don't know exactly when he is supposed have all his fur in. Any advice???? Thanks

From my experience it usually comes in after his first birthday.

One of my favorite pictures of Macs is when he was ten months old. Skinny because he didn't have his full coat yet, awkward looking, and what would later become all dark fur behind his eyes was just a single line behind each eye, shaped like parenthesis, making him look like a cartoon character! If I had a scanner I'd post it here.

My tri boy Ripley had a full coat by 10 months, Frosty, my merle, still doesn't have a full coat at 14 months. I mean he's very scraggly. I spoke to his breeder, and she said it can take up to three years....we shall see. I can tell a difference in the last month, so hopefully it will continue to grow.

I think it does take about 2 years to completely grow in... My sable and white, Lady, is almost 2 and almost grown in, but my blue merle, Misty, is only 7 months old and very scraggly looking.... got a long way to go to full fur....:wink2:

Layla looked like a show Sheltie in miniature from 6 months. Bitsy Boodle looked like a coyote built by committee until she was over a year. Now Layla is a silky, full coated Sheltie and Bits looks like a tribble! Every Sheltie is different.

I've been told it can take up to two years.

Here's a crappy pic taken last night. My dog will be 1 year old in a week. That's his winter coat too.

Here's my scraggly one, at about 11 months...he's looking a little better at 14 months, I'll try to find a recent pic...

And my other sheltie at the same age, you can see how much more coat he has...

Thanks!!

Ok, I am feeling a little better that he has his "scraggly" fur. Since he is 9 months I guess I shouldn't expect him to have his full fur. Thank you for telling me. I shall wait and see how much of a coat he gets in when he is older. Thanks for the pics too! They are all gorgeous shelties. That sheltie in the last pic really does have a lot of fur! Oh, and the one who said that it was a crappy picture that they took, no it wasn't, I can't get my puppy to sit that still for a picture, I can only get him when he is sound asleep!!!

Oh,

Oh, if you look under my profile there is a small pic of him during the fall/summer when he was about 6-7 months old. It's not a very good one, you can't see his face, but you can see most of his fur. It is somewhat longer now than in that picture, his mane is a lot fuller though.
