Furminator?

Okay, well first of all I would like to introduce myself. My name is Analeyn and I am considering the Sheltie if I do get a dog. I'm also considering the Papillon because they're healthy, small, portable, etc but I really do like Shelties (I fell in love with the breed when I was like 7 and I was playing Nintendogs :D)... Lol. I'm getting off topic.

Anyway, I was curious about the Furminator. I'm seeing bad reviews and good reviews. The Furminator looks likes it's... Sharp :D. Sort of dangerous looking. Does it ruin the coat? Some pictures would be helpful for before and after. Tanks in advance! I hope to get to know you guys better.

I wouldn't use a furminator on a sheltie. I think it damages the guard hairs (pretty shiny hair on top). If you're looking for a brush to pull out the undercoat when they're blowing coat, I recommend a undercoat rake.

Others will weigh in.. I don't have before and after pics because my dog is only 10 months old and we haven't had to do any serious grooming yet.
 
I love your choice in breeds! I've always had Shelties, and when my foreever pup died 4.5 years ago, I looked really seriously at a Papillon. In the end, I ended up with two Shelties instead.

But the groomer at my pet store has a Papillon and I just love, love, love this dog too. It's nice to have a dog so portable!

Anyway, back to your question....

I don't have a problem using furminators on Shelties, but DO NOT follow the directions they give you. Never, ever, ever, use the furminator on their guard hair (top coat). This goes for all double-coated breeds.

If used correctly, the furminator is great for Shelties that big time blow their coat. And the way to use correctly is exactly the same as you would use a rake or slicker or pin brush. You line brush! Never run the brush down the back.

I use the Furminator in summer. My dogs compete in sports, outside, and it gets stinking hot here. So I use the furminator to reduce their undercoat as much as possible. There is a chance you can overdo it, but generally I find it doesn't effect their outer coat or their undercoat in the longer term. You'll need to decide when your dog's coat grows whether you think its necessary to strip the coat down.

Have a search on the forum - furminators have been discussed a lot here and there should be a link to geerome's video of how to use a furminator on a sheltie (so you dont strip outer coat). Its a must if you decide to go down that route.

I agree with you Jess.Of the sheltie breeders I know they cringe when they hear that word Furmoinator.It is not meant for shelties.JMO.
 
Don't bother using one. I fell for the advertising and bought one. It shreds their fur.

Buy yourself a good Chris Christiansen pin brush. They are worth the extra money and last a long time. I love mine. Amazon has good deals on them.
