Hey walloongirl, I had the same problem when I first used one. And working as a groomers assistant, thats a real problem. Try holding it lightly (dont grip it) and put one hand under your dogs stomach for support and then glide it over his coat applying firm but gentle pressure. Dont push it in to his coat and dont spend all day brushing, I've seen people bald a dog with this tool. Not very pretty! Good luck

I dont know why it wouldn't work?
Thats strange, I don't know why it wouldn't work for you. Sadie is just a pup and hasn't gotten her full coat yet but I also took my Furminator to my parents and used it on their mature sheltie. He has a very thick coat and it worked very well on him.
Perhaps your dogs have too much undercoat? Sunchaser made a interesting good point about undercoats near the beginning thread, maybe it has something to do with that?
I'm much gentler than the groomer in the video is, I use slower, smooth strokes when I'm using the furminator brush, I also wwork at the tangly spots by holding the fur close to her body so it doesn't pull. But in general it does go through her fur and removes a lot of under coat.
Places that are busher and a bit more tangly I brush with the slicker brush first to smooth, then I use the furminator on her.
Some say that spritzing the fur with water first helps. With Sadie I don't notice a difference but maybe thats a suggestion.

How many people squished tomotoes all over the kitchen slamming that sucker down on 'em like the 250 pound guy on TV? Same principle. Work the furminator just like a regular brush on a Sheltie -- lift,, brush, lift, brush. You'll have to clear the fur out often. Good luck!

I bought one and hated it at first. It didn't seem to be getting through the top coat and my regular undercoat rake worked much better. The more I work with it, the more I like it, but still, for the money, I thing the regular rake is as good. The good thing is though, that my boys like being brushed with it more than with the regular rake....they also like it better when my husband brushes them, lol, fickle dogs.

I must admit that until I saw the Furminator video I never gave it a thought!
Believe it or not, my old Sheltie, Timber, never shed! He had a gorgeous coat but it stuck to him. I would bring him the the groomer 3 or 4 times per year, and that was it.
Not sure if I'm going to be so blessed with Chewbacca (Bacca)....so perhaps there's a Furminator in my future....?

I love mine, its worth spending a bit more money for it but don't buy it in a store or online store, Ebay is the place to go! You should be able to get it for half the regular price.

There are knock-offs available. I son't know how good they are, though. I got my "real" (I hope ) one on Ebay and it works fine!

Interesting, they're hardly ever that cheap and I've never seen one on sale before! Good deal!
Now that I look at the site I don't think that's the regular price, I think its on sale so if anyone is interested then don't wait too long!
