Hi - My 7 year old, Sonny has this scaly, flaky yellow skin condition over most of his body. I just noticed on his underside, this black discoloration on the skin, that can be loosened. It is right at the base of the fur strands. It covers one-third of his underside. Sonny is borderline hypothyroid, and is on a low dose of thyroid medication. Could this have anything to do with his skin condition? Does anybody know what this is, and how I would treat it. Thank you. Susan
 
Thanks. He's due back for T4 and TSH levels soon, so I'll make the appointment sooner than later. Also, just curious whether Shelties with thyroid issues are more prone to liver issues? We just had our 8 year old die from liver failure last month, and he was also hypothyroid. I want to be aware with Sonny if this is the case. Thanks. Susan

I guess in this case, if you get the blood panel done you can make sure and watch the liver functions and make sure that they do not change.

I'm not sure that they necessarily go together, but in my case, my Bacca does have both.

He is 3.5 years old and was diagnosed first with hypothyroid and then a little while later with some kind of liver issues. The hypo is under control with meds. The liver is still somewhat of a concern but we are controlling it with milkthistle supplements and a lower protein diet.

I keep thinking about what came first....(i.e. the chicken or the egg). From Bacca's events and subsequent diagnoses, it all started with a mouth infection that went septic into his liver. Preliminary bloodwork revealed him to be hypothyroid, but this would probably have been dormant for years and never found except for the blood work that was done. The liver issues became apparent after his second round of bloodwork to recheck his thyroid.

Bacca is due for his next round of bloodwork. And I do have a whole lot of more questions for my vet.

Hypothyroidism is quite common in Shelties. Liver not as much other than gall bladder disease.

The other breed I think of with high % of hypothyroidism is Goldens and I do not think of them much at all for liver disease.

However, thinking about it hypothyroidism and chronic active hepitis are both thought to have an origin as autoimmune diseases. I do think we see a lot of autoimmune disorders in shelties, goldens ,dobermans, cockers to name a few. Goldens and Cockers are the most common breeds for IMHA(immune mediated hemolytic amenia) and Dobermans also have issues with hypothyiodism and big time issues with liver disease. Cockers also have hypothyroidism issues. So that might be the link.

Can be related to thyroid. Check to see if this is Pyoderma. My Sheltie suffers from this and is on antihistimes, fatty omega supplements and during outbreaks she is on antibotics. It is a recurring condition. Medicated shampoos help and calendula ointment is good to help itching. Allergies may be the culprit if not thyroid.
