I've been checking out your lovely forum for a while now. What a wonderful resource! We brought Kasey (6 mo old female sheltie) into our family in May, first sheltie, first dog. Its been quite an adventure but I think training is going well, she has trained us to close the closet doors, pick up the polly pockets, get up at 6:30 am sharp, and keep the bathroom garbage can on the counter. :wink2:

I've been reading quite a bit about clicker training and am very intersted. Can anyone suggest a good book or two?
 
Welcome! It is amazing how quickly those little ones get us trained isn't it? You picked a great breed to start pet ownership with. You'll find we're all a bit partial to shelties here. This is a great forum with very knowledgable people that are always willing to offer great advice.

It's amazing what they teach us that we didn't even know we needed to learn! lol

FYI..I was in Minnesota recently...south of Minneapolis. BEAUTIFUL state you have!
 
Welcome! My pup is 6 months old, too. I hope you'll post some photos of Kasey. This board is a wonderful resource and full of all-round great people with the best taste in dogs. :winkgrin:

The book that came highly recommended to me was "The Power of Positive Dog Training". I started on clicker training and found this a great resource and then it kinda fell off my priorities when I brought home Indy. But after Bacca's little adventure in the woods, I'm getting ready to dust it off and work on his "recall".

Welcome to the group. I laughed about your being trained. I remember those days well...first dog and the things they don't tell you in the dog books (like the whole put the garbage can on the counter thing!) after this long, it just becomes second nature. I always marvel when I go over to a friend's house (without a dog) and wow, you can leave food sitting out on the counter?!?!? What a concept! Oh yeah, and then when I had my baby, no one in the dog books or the baby books warned me about the perils of dogs & dirty diapers. That wasn't fun :dead:

I looooooooooooooove Clicker training. There's lots of awesome reference material out there. Anything by Karen Pryor is good. Clicker Fun by Deb Jones for ideas for trickers, etc. Click for Joy is supposed to be very good but I haven't managed to find it yet. I have a couple too that are specific to training for competitive obedience...one by Morgan Spector and can't remember the other.

Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson is another great book...not specifically about clicker training but a great book about dogs in general and how they learn, etc.
 
Welcome to the group.

We have a new puppy at home as well, and I was chuckling and apologizing to a guest today, while explaining why all the shoes were up on top of end tables and so forth.

But they are just so much fun!
