Grooming the ruff~

As of lately,it looks like someone came in and put a body of a sheltie with Trapp's head,that looks like the two don't go together.

We have determined the reason for the major uneveness of Trapp's ruff,and it was caused by his tags dangling and breaking his ruff. Well his ruff has grown considerably,and now looks as though someone took pinking shears,as he is very jagged,and out of shape.

Thank goodness for the good pictures & tutorial in the sheltie grooming manual,as I feel confidant I can get him back in shape.So I will take before & after pictures when I start. I am not going to be agressive,but he definately needs a shape up.
 
The only tags mine wear are their ID tags. I hate how their ruffs get the tarnish on them -- but it washes right off.
 
Mine never wear collars. Except of course when going on walks and what not. Even then they wear a small rolled slip collar. I can imagine that tags could cause havoc. Though I understand why you may not feel comfortable without him wearing them.
Make sure each time you brush out his ruff... you spray on lots of water and a good conditioning spray to help protect the coat and moisturize, as a dry coat will, of course, break easier. I would personally spray him down everyday... as I know from experience...:lol: SC can get quite dry in the summer months.
 
I have a whole bag full of all those cute seasonal collars with different designs for each dog. I finally had to give them up. Nevermind that you couldn't see them in their fur! I found also that it left their ruffs separated and some of the tags did damage. Barkley has a tag from his microchip that is yellow and it turned his white ruff a yellow that I couldn't even get off with White on White. I had to wait for it to grow out.

Long story...no more collars for mine. I use martingale collars when I take them somewhere or a show collar. Their ruffs are so much better now.

Take heart, Michele! Trapp's will come back, just be patient.
 
Bailey doesn't wear dog tags either. She is in and out of her crate all day. Dog tags can get stuck in wired crates and can cause them to choke. I don't want to take any chances.

All her tags (ID, rabies and license) are attached to her martingale and harness. She only wears them when we are going out for a walk. However, since she isn't microchipped and I do want ID on her at all times, she wears a nylon embroided collar 24/7 with no tags. You can't see it unless you part her fur. Her name and my cell # is embroided on the collar. It's also useful when there's a cute guy at the park...oh what's this on your neck. Oh it's just your collar with my #. :winkgrin:
 
I think that's very interesting that so many dogs' ruffs were broken by collars and tags. Both of my dogs wear their collars all of the time, and they each have their IDs on them. I would prefer to take them off more often, but I think that having them wear them in case they were to ever get away outweighs the benefits of taking them off (at least for me).

But, neither of my dogs' ruffs are broken or dry, or tarnished from the tags. Maybe it's genetic?

(Also, neither of my dogs are crated anymore so I don't have to worry about the tags or collars getting stuck in crates).

I should've mentioned this is my original post. Bailey's fur also isn't broken, dry or matted from wearing her collar all the time. And I agree with you. I'd rather her wear a collar with ID all the time just in case she did take off. In my case, I feel the benefits are more important than possibly damaged fur.

I do recall my first sheltie having grayish fur from her metal ID tag. We switched to a plastic tag. That solved the problem.
 
These guys are always with ID,if they go with us.As for here in the back yard to go potty,play times I prefer no collars. Imagine what tags do to Mia's coat.In less than a half hour,she is an unsightly color of charcoal.

I am going to wait to get my order from CherryBrook,as I ordered shampoo,conditioner (which I don't use on these guys) but I do on grooming customers dog.
Now my memory leaves me,but also ordered a couple more items.But he is in for a trim,once he gets a bath.
 
I figure they day I have no ID on one is the day they follow a deer into the great wide world. :uhoh:
 
My dogs wear collars all the time. That's why I love their kangaroo martingale collars because they do not matt the fur.

That being said, Bacca repeatedly slipped his collar yesterday while I tried to get him to walk over a small bridge. Seems his collar his too loose. Looks like I'm going to have to find a way to get it resized or get him a new one.
