Heartguard vs Interceptor

Hello all. I have a question regarding a heart worm preventative. The breeder told me never to use heardguard on shelties because some shelties react badly to it and can have seizures. So I've been buying interceptor for Eevee.

However, ever since her liver issue flared up after spaying, I'm little worried about giving any flea treatment (she gets frontline plus) or heart worm preventative to her just incase it does further damage to the liver.

I've been giving her flea treatment every other month and also interceptor as well to make it easier on the liver. I took her to the vet to day for pre and post bile acid test to check how she's doing. Last few days, there were time Eevee didn't want to eat her food. I split her meals into 3 small meals to help her liver out instead of 1 huge meal.

I read on the web that some people doesn't like to use heart worm preventatives as it is 'poison' and instead does heart worm test every 3 months just to make sure.

Has anyone had any experience with Shelties with liver issues and heart worm preventatives and flea treatments? Thank you so much in advance!
 
We now have four shelties. I will not use a flea preventative on any of them (topical or pill), but considering the increasing number of heartworm cases in our area I choose to give them a heartworm preventative. I was using Interceptor until I could no longer get it, then switched to Heartgard. So far I've administered two doses with no issues, but I hold my breath every time. Not totally comfortable using this med and will be switching back to Interceptor when my supply of Heartgard runs out in a few months.

My feeling is that I wouldn't want to swallow pesticide so why would I give it to my dogs?
 
I have been using Heartguard or the generic (Iverhart Max) on my shelties since 2007. I have had probably 13 altogether that I have rescued & none have had a reaction. I switched from Interceptor back in 2007 when a sheltie I rescued turned up HW positive while being on it. She came to me HW negative & had been on preventative. I switched her to Interceptor & kept her on it. When her next HW test was done she was HW positive. I was so upset. We did the slow kill with her & she did great. I then switched all of my shelties to Heartguard & since then have had no positives while being on it & no reactions. I researched it tons before doing it & will continue to use it.
 
I use to have my Beau on Sentinel until the factory issue thing a while back, now, I have him on Revolution its both a flea and heart worm preventative.

on Saturday we go for our annual Heart worm test, here's to a clean test, and me keeping my cool(its at a community center) Hopefully, they will have quiet rooms so Beau won't get upset
 
My shelties have been on heartguard for years never had a reaction. I know just use ivermectin, still have had no problems.

We took our liver compromised sheltie off all heartworm and flea meds. We used a product called diatomaceous earth, food grade, and put it all around the yard and on his fur. DE kills fleas naturally. The thing is that with the liver meds your sheltie is on, it just might not make sense to put his liver through more of a workout with flea and hw preventative.
