I had friends whose dogs were on Revolution and after a year or two, and a switch in vets, it was recommended that they use Interceptor- something about the topical not always being as effective. I personally don't like any of the topicals and I've heard of too many dogs having reactions to those. of course, the dogs could also react to taking pills but that's probably not as noticeable. anyway, just throwing that info out there.

We live in California, in the Sierra Hills at about 4,500 feet, and we've never had fleas here, I guess because it's snows quite a bit here. Do any of you have the same situation? I know that about 15 miles below us they still have fleas.

Well this is winter wonderland. And yes, we do have fleas, though I've been blessed that my pups have never had them. My mom, however, had them hopping out of her carpet. So yes, fleas go dormant in winter and come alive in spring....no matter the climate.
 
I wouldnt be that fortunate to not have fleas!! I live 2 blocks from the ocean, sand fleas, regular fleas, dog ticks and deer ticks....:rolleyes2:
 
Well, we don't have fleas here at all. I remember that when I first came here (Twain Harte, California), I asked the Vet for something for the fleas and he said we don't get them here. Also, my little Bichon, Spike was white and I did all of his grooming and never saw a flea--we had him for over a year. My old sheltie never got them here either. I guess I'll ask the Vet about it--we've got an appointment for more shots for Buddy tomorrow.
 
My dogs have only once had fleas - we had a bad season for fleas this years so quite a few dogs at the local oval had fleas. My vet said long haired dogs are less likely to get fleas.
 
Should I ask my vet?

My Dylan has been on interceptor eversince we had him. He is 3 years old now. My vet treated Dylan for two years now and had him checked for Lime and hartworm every year with lime vaccination. Should I ask him not to check for hearworm this year since he has been on interceptor for all his life? Plus, he really doesn't eat anything off the ground. I don't let him out by himself and always with him when we are out. Sometimes I wonder if my vet is more interested in making money....

Yes, you can tell your vet that you are looking to trim your costs a little this year and have been told by other people and other vets that there is no need to do a heartworm test every year when your dog is on year round prevenative. If he values you as a customer/patient he will work with you. If he doesn't and insists on doing it, find another vet. Hope that helps!

some states/areas require testing and certain vaccinations yearly. In Alabama, you can't buy heartworm meds without the dog being tested. We also still have yearly rabies vaccinations instead of the 3yr vaccination. You need to find out what the law requires before thinking the vet is only interested in money. might not be his choice..........
 
I couldn't find the law anywhere, but my search engine resulted in another Pennsylvania vet hospital website stating if the dog is on heartworm med all year long, they recommend testing every three years. The law should apply for all Pennsylvania, right?
