Hi Everyone,

Just joined the forums last night! I'm not a Sheltie owner just yet. I've been thinking of getting a dog for awhile now and have been doing some research on different breeds (I live in an apartment right now but I'm in the process of purchasing a townhouse) and found that the Sheltie seems perfect!

I grew up with a lot of different breeds of dogs. Great Pyrenees, Newfoundland, Dalmatian, Golden Retriever, Collie, Old English Sheepdog (notice the large breed trend here?). Those were all "family dogs", so this will be my first dog since striking out on my own! I'm really excited for my future family member and companion.

Anyways, I thought I'd join the forums to get some insight from everyone! If anyone has some tips or fun things to share about the Sheltie - please do! Nice to meet everyone!

Welcome to the forum!

When you do get your pup, you'll be very glad you joined the forum. We felt a lot better prepared for our puppy after we'd read through some of the Puppy posts here... and we had done a LOT of research on the breed before that, too!

It's always nice to know that if/when you run into something unexpected with your pup, you've got a large, and very friendly and helpful, community to fall back on for support and advice.

Welcome to the forum and hello from a Missouri native! I grew up in the Joplin, MO area!

My two Shelties have known nothing but living in an apartment, so don't let that deter you at all. Do I wish my two had a yard? For sure, but as long as they get the activity they need to be happy, I have no worries. :smile2:

Do share with us when you add that new puppy to your life and feel free to ask any questions!

Hello and welcome to the Sheltie Nation Forum!

There is a boatload of information here on Shelties. I hope that you have luck finding all the information you need to make an informed decision.

Dani

Welcome!!

Hubby and I are on our second trio of Shelties. They make great companions, are really fast learners (thus keep them busy with agility or obedience, etc.) and very loyal...but...they can be barkers. Our latest rescue is a little guy who came without papers from a Sheltie breeder and he barks when he's playing, barks at the dog next door. You get the picture. Since he's older (we think 6 or 7 yrs) it's been a difficult habit to break.

Shelties also require a good bit of grooming depending on thickness of their coat. Two of our guys are easy to keep groomed (bathe them and brush them myself), but Murphy's coat is way too thick so he goes to the groomer for regular touch ups.

Have you decided on a sable, tri or blue merle? We've had one of each!

Welcome to the forum! Of course, we're all greatly in favor of Shelties here! But seriously, you have run across a great group of people with a collective experience level you wouldn't believe - from first puppy owners to breeders who have been in the business of hand-raising Shelties forever!

Unlike a lot here, I am a serial (rather than group) Sheltie owner. I got my first as a puppy in 1993. I got my second Sheltie as a 5-year-old puppy mill rescue last year. They are great dogs!

I lived in a two-story townhouse (in a quadplex with no enclosed yard) when I got my first Sheltie. My mom called him my "apartment collie". Two years later, despite being told "you can't raise a Border Collie in an apartment", I got my first Border Collie. (And YES, you CAN raise two very active herding dogs in a townhouse! You just have to be smart about it!)

Welcome! I have family all over your side of that great state! Just so you know; Lilly and I live in a very small condo. She's my 6th (serial) sheltie. We do love our weekend trips to the bark park. :biggrin2:
