I'm new here and new to Shelties! I picked up my first Sheltie from the airport last Wednesday. His name is Marshal and he's an 8 month old blue merle boy. He was destined for the show ring until he decided to have a second growth spurt and has grown a tad too long and is on the taller end of the standard. Basically, though he's gorgeous in every other way, he looks big though he's still in size.
Marshal has big paws to fill. He was purchased with the hope that he will work as my service dog, assisting me with my multiple disabilities. He has been having a bit of trouble adjusting but after a week, seems much more comfortable in the house. He also is going through his second fear period. To make sure things go as successfully as possible, we have only made short trips out around the block, making sure to keep it positive. He will not be making trips into public until he's older and has more training. In the mean time, we're working at home on our basic manners.
He starts training class next week with my lovely friend and trainer, Alyson.
Whether or not Marshal makes it as a service dog, he is in his forever home. I plan on getting involved in performance sports with him and getting him herding instinct tested.
