Hi, My name is Merry Dorrell, i'm 18 years old and i have a shelty who will be nine in october. i know nothing about him other then he's very attatched to me hates it when people get close to me and that he's a very good guard dog. i dont know his specific breed but his colors are black and white with a small patch of brown (about 1/2 an inch across and 1/4 an inch in height) above his eyes (he looks like he's got eye brows lol) i have pictures of him but i'm not 100% sure how to post them on here. i got patches (my shelty) for christmas back in 2000 he was sooo small! lol i wanted to call him dip stick because his tail has white fur near the tip of it. the only other place he's got white is on his chest. he's pure breed shelty but i dont have papers for him. we never got him fixed i wanted to breed him when he was younger but i'm afraid now he's not able to because of his age.

I, myself, am an animal lover other then patches i have 3 cats 3 ferrets and a mess of fish. i love all types of animals.
 
Welcome Merry, I would say your sheltie is what's called a tri-color. A tri- color is black brown and tan. I haven't seen one yet that didn't have the cute tan "eyebrows". I also have a tri-color Fergus who is two years old. On breeding your sheltie I would think it over very carefully. Do a lot, and I mean a lot, of research so you know what you are getting into and that you are doing it for the right reasons. There are members here that do breed. One has a litter right now.There is a lot of knowledge needed to raise those little ones properly from birth to the time they leave to go to their forever homes. The doggie momma does not do all the work trust me. There are also other threads here that will advise you. There are great people here and you will get very good advice.

Breeding is a big responsibility--the right reason to breed is to keep the breed healthy, and involves genetic health testing. And you need a lot of knowledge before you breed a dog--to breed without knowing exactly what you are doing can be disastrous. Did you know, for example, that dogs can spread viruses when being bred, and do you know how to prevent this?

Without seeing pics of of him, it's hard to say, but it sounds like he's a Tri-colour.

You are correct that age 9 is a little old to start breeding. And I would caution against breeding a dog when you don't know his history.
 
yes, i thought nine was a little to old to breed but i wasn't completely sure. any who i never really thought about breeding him a hundred percent the only history i know is who his mom and dad are. and that he himself has no outstanding medical issues (aside from the bare butt part i posted about in the health area) i have photo bucket because i'm also on a ferret forum and that's how you transfer pictures there....

Hi, Merry! You have a perfectly lovely Sheltie. I agree that you're wise not to breed him. He may have a genetic mange issue, and you certainly wouldn't want that passed on!
