help..10 week puppy is peeing and pooping in crate

I am 80 years old. Never had more than a very short time in our lives without a dog, many puppies.

Some of you will not like my method but here goes anyway.

Folks these days treat their animals as they do their children. Everything done for them hand and foot.

Never owned a crate, may never have one. I cannot remember one pup we have ever had that wasn't potty trained two weeks after we brought them home. Shelties, like Collies that we raised as well are very similar in their traits. Very intelligent and understand many things, one of them is the nose in the mess they made. Then take them outside, set them down in the grass.

So many folks with a dog allow them to "OWN" you, not the other way around. Dogs among many other animals understand love, some times it is hard love.

Tuppence used to do that too, i made a rookie error and her crate was too big I put a pillow up one end and she learned fairly quickly to hold it

Are you talking about basically artificial turf- or is there something else out there? Just wandering, because I may use this technique in the future.

There are several on the market made for this purpose. The one I used is called Tinkle Turf. You can get it on Amazon in several sizes. It comes with a tray the artificial turf sits in. I put a pee pad folded to fit the tray underneath the grass which kept the tray dry, and changed that twice a day or as needed when they got older or for a bigger litter. I got two of the turf pieces (you can order extras) so I could rotate and washed it once a day in a vinegar water mixture which kept it clean and fresh with no smell. It's a great system!

When I started taking the puppies outside, they knew immediately what the grass was for. That's not to say they were instantly housetrained, LOL. There will always be some accidents in the house until they're about 4 months old. They're just not physically capable of holding it. Crates were always dry though by around 12 weeks.
