HELP!!! Grooming disaster

I have a 5 yr old sheltie who until yesterday had a beautiful, typical sheltie coat. Yesterday I took her to a new groomer, and when they asked "do you want her cut, or just groomed", I answered "cut", and elaborated that I wanted her neatened up around the paws and under her tail, which had grown too long. ( I thought by asking "just groomed", they were asking me if I wanted her just bathed and not neatened up at all).

Anyway, when I picked her up, believe it or not, her coat was completely cut off, to approx. 1" all over. Her whole topcoat is gone, and she just has about 1" of fuzz, kind of like when she was a puppy -- I have never seen or heard anything like this on a sheltie. I was devastated.

Will her coat grow back OK? Is there any permanent damage to her coat ? Also, It is almost December in New York, and getting cold. Will she have the warmth she needs? Does she need extra warmth (like a sweater or jacket) without her natural coat?

Really I am just looking for info about whether her coat will grow back OK and if she will be OK in the cold. There is nothing I can do about this horrible mistake after the fact, but I am just needing some reassurance at this point that it isn't anything worse than a bad haircut. Thank you for any advice you can offer.
 
Rhonda..yes it will grow back. I had three shelties that had been shaved bald (they are ages 11, 9 and 7 years old), and only Holly's did not grow back (she has medical issues preventing it from growing back) As a matter if fact the other two's fur came back in thicker and fuller then normal. It took about 4 months for it to grow back in. Since Holly's fur did not grow back in, I got put a sweater/coat on her now. Poor baby shivers when it gets colder at night here.
 
oh man that doesnt seem too bad,

my older sheltie went to a groomer and got a cut, and we specified how she was to be cut.
All her knats and knots were to be takened out

they did not do exactly what we asked instead they shaved her like a lion. except left her tail with fur....her tail had no more knots, but they shaved her?!?!?!? like a lion:mad::mad::mad::mad:

needless to say that was like 3 yrs ago and it still urks me

I am happy that based on your experience, it is likely to grow back OK. In previous years, she always loved the winter and playing in the snow...I guess if she seems to be shivering this year, I can get her a coat or a sweater...

In my shelties case, they left her a bushy tail and she kind of looks like a fox, actually

I am IRKED as well, but I guess I have to let it go at this point. My sheltie is oblivious to it all.

Yes rhonda....they shaved the three in a lion cut. These are dogs that came into my rescue. I tell you I was livid. To me it looked hideous. A truly good groomer knows you never shave a sheltie. I know how you feel about this. I was so embarassed for these babies , since to me the sheltie fur is what makes them so regal. Thankfully it does grow back and your baby is old enough that unless she has a medical issues (mine has thyroid and Alopecia X), the hair will grow back in

I wasn't too happy with the lion cut either. A lion cut .. on a SHELTIE?!?! Since it happened before the 3 (Maisie, Shanjen and Holly) came into our home, there wasn't much I could do about it - but I'm here to tell you, it just looked silly.

SheltieMom can probably discuss this better than me (I should talk - I rarely brush our herd), but I think it's a good idea to do regular brushings as the hair grows back in. Will probably help to prevent tangling the undercoat, etc.
 
Oh wow! How horrible! It makes me nauseous even to think of shaving my guys!

Gio had to have his belly and up his flanks shaved a couple of years ago for an abdonimal ultrasound, shaved right down to the skin. It took a while, but eventually the hair did grow back in. Probably 10 months or so before it was back to looking normal. For a while, it looked really "frizzy", but one good shed and some help from the Furminator and it all evened out in the end. Now, about a year and a half after the shave, you would never tell that he was bald up his sides.

You can help ensure that the hair grows in healthily by providing some supplements to her regular diet. A raw egg cracked over her food 2 times a week is great for the coat. Or adding in some omega-3 oil and vitamin E. Both can be picked up at a regular human health food store or pharmacy.

I agree with the grooming as the hair grows back in. I used a soft pin brush daily until the hair was thick enough to groom normally. After the guard hairs were growing back in, I partially stripped the undercoat out with the Furminator. This thinned it a bit and prevented mats from forming as the hair grew.

As for the cold, that depends how cold you are right now in your area. Here in Saskatchewan, Canada we are having an unseasonably warm winter. Very little snow, temperatures barely dropping to -10C. In that case, a jacket probably isn't necessary. But if the wind is really cold or you have lots of snow, then a jacket might be needed for longer outdoor activities. Probably not for quick trips outside to pee, but if you plan on going for a walk or a play outside.
 
I'm so sorry you had to go through this, it makes me so angry, I wonder how some people are licensed to groom :mad:

There's a thread under grooming called 'Petco Shaved My Dog!' that has some good suggestion of things to do to help your pup's coat grow back. That lady had a similar experience to you, her dog was a gorgeous sable sheltie who was shaved like a lion. She posted the photo but its since been removed.

It stinks that this happened but remember that it will grow back and she'll be as good as new :smile2:

If you didn't already, you should speak to the manager and asked for your money back. You may want to use it to buy some supplements to help the fur grow back

I will definitely add some supplements to the diet and brush her well as it grows out. I am going to send my hubby to ask for the money back...I think he is better at that than me:smile2:

I will give an update as to how long it took to grow back once she looks like herself again.
