Help on height/weight and proper amt of food

Don't forget to count in all her treats for the day. We tend to forget about a cookie here and there, but they should be included in her food list.

Have you thought about only feeding 2x a day.I would think at 9 months,it should be sufficiant.
Even in the beginning,if the pup seems hungry, maybe offer a kong, carrots, ice cubes,to tide them over.

We feed 2x a day here, with the exception of Earnhardt. He is fed once daily for the most part.Sometimes Brian & I don't leave notes for one another,as he gets home from work, after I leave in the morning,so sometimes he gets fed,and I already have done it.

Of course..Earnie does'nt care,as he is the resident counter surfer here..:eek2:

Thanks Everyone! I do think she needs to loose. I think some of the gain got under my radar due to her coat coming in more. I do feel more fat around her shoulder area than her ribcage, but not being close to an expert, I'm unsure if that's normal or too much. I had been wondering about 2x's a day feeding so appreciate the confirm it's ok to do at this point. I had also been wondering about green beans, as I read about the substitution on some other threads. I think I will cut back the food a bit and replace w/ the green beans. And, good point on the treats. I think around the holidays she got many cookies and ate them all, as we were munching our human variety! She does get treats everyday, but not many bisquit/cookies anymore. Mostly a few Zukes PB and Mother Hubbard Liver, but I will make sure I count all that in too. She also likes to chew on a bone made from pork and chicken liver on the inside, are there many calories in these?

I guess the impt thing is that I noticed something, and can now follow the simple rule, too fat cut back, too skinny add more!!! We also took a longer walk the other day, so will work to get longer walks in as much as possible, especially now that spring is trying to get sprung. The chart is helpful. If I measure from her shoulder blades back to the end of her tail she's 24" So, she seems to be tall and long if I interpret things right. :smile2:

Hey caro.....I somehow missed that spreadsheet before! Maybe we should update it for older pups too? Another thread?

I never feed what the package says. If you feed by the weight guidelines on the package, then a fat dog will just get more food. My package says I should feed a minimum of 1 3/4 cups per day. I feed 1 1/3 and I think its too much and in process of cutting back.

At 9 months, I would switch to twice per day. Also, you didn't say in your post if you are still feeding puppy food or not, but I would also switch to adult food at this point as well. At 9 months most of the body structure is there.

As others said, just monitor the waistline and energy levels.

Thank you Barb. :smile2: I started the switch to 2x's/day today. Yeah 1 3/4 seems like a lot! I'm going to cut her back a bit and substitue the green beans starting tomorrow and just watch. I am still feeding puppy food, and did not know I could switch her over. Guess that would help with extra calories she doesn't need, right? We had an extra long walk today and then some puppy play time as my neighbor's 5 dogs were out playing on our way back. She's crashed out right now, lol. :wink2:

People can go into the spreadsheet and update their dog's details, I know a few of the pups are now past 1yr of age so they need updating (I put an asteriks next to their names as they may not have done growing - I thought I had a column for dob but it seems to have disappeared). I can put together a growth spreadsheet too - might be useful to chart.

Brandy's mum - to measure her height you need to measure from the shoulder blades to the floor. I find it easiest to put a piece of paper on the wall and mark them off at the wall just like a kid.

Appreciate the info Caro. I will measure her that way to make sure my 1st was correct. I did measure from her shoulder blades to the floor, but the paper is much easier and more accurate I'm sure.
