Help, Only got half a tick!

Gingers Mom

We all went out on great hike yesterday, nice sunny day, pretty fall colors after load of rain. I found 2 deer ticks (so far)on Ginger.

One I got off OK. The other had attached to her belly. when I went to remove it, I didn't get it all.

What do I do now? :confused2:

Thanks for your help,

I would also call the vet !

Ticks carry disease and the head is the part that is more than likely still in . The vets office should be able to advise you what is the correct thing to do.:wink2:

Dab with antispetic and use tweezers. It happens to us occasionally, too. You just have to dig the sucker out. My vet showed us how.

Did the vet give you advice?

I had the same problem on Sunday. Mine chewed off half of the tick before we found it and we had to use tweezers to get the stubborn head out.

I have just started using "Tick Twister" from Petco with great success on slightly-bloated and larger deer ticks and every tick has released on it's own after one or two revolutions. Manufacturer claims they don't spill their guts when you "take them for a spin", but I doubt that's actually been tested or confirmed. However it seems better than the risk of squeezing them, and hence their guts, into your sheltie. Tick Twister does not work on really tiny ticks.

We hike in Hopewell, NJ all the time and went hiking near you, at the Sourland Mtn. Preserve on Saturday and north of Lambertville on Sunday.

The NJ deer ticks have gotten really bad again starting about three weeks ago. I TRY to go through his coat with a flea comb immediately afterwards and to go out in early AM when it's 45 degrees and colder! He loves nothing more than a hike and rock-hopping.

My prior sheltie died of Lyme Disease from the not so rare kidney failure, and my two year old has had it twice, first at 6 mos. despite Frontline and vigilance!

I now have his Lyme titers tested 2X/year since he'll always be positive. Very expensive.

Tick Twister sounds nifty - I may have to try that. Maddie had 3 ticks on her last week and I didn't get any of the heads. I doused them liberally in alcohol and they did scab over and fall out after a few days, though.
