Herding Toys?

So when we go to my boyfriends parents house max loves it so much, mainly because they live on a farm which means he gets big open spaces to run in. He loves to try and chase the chickens which is a no bueno because michaels dad gets angry. So then he tried to herd the horse and of course the horse didn't like that at all and she tries to stomp on him. Now his dad has cows and he wants to herd them too but Michael's dad is not allowing that at all. Max loves to chase things and try to herd them, he even tries to herd Charlie our cat at the apartment:lol: So im wondering is there any herding toys i can buy max so he will have something to play with that won't scare him but gets him herding at the same time. I have know clue if this post even makes sense. It barely makes sense to me. :rolleyes2:
 
I've not heard of any herding toys, though I can't say I've ever thought about it!

But, if you want to encourage herding behavior...I can tell you that you don't need a specific herding toy! What about a remote controlled car? I know my dogs would go nuts over it.
 
A flirt stick is a great chasing toy. I also use DA BIRD for indoor play, which is technically a cat toy, but Maddie doesn't seem to mind.

Toffee herds Scotty, too!!!
Because he is a white poodle with a puppy haircut, it really looks like Toffee is herding a lamb, across the meadow near the dog park!
The pictures are after they are too hot and tired and Scotty doesn't want to be the sheep anymore, lol, so they rest for a split second, lol

Well, if you can't get him a Darby, a Scotty or another dog or cat he can heard, I would have to say that the remote controlled car sounds like a great idea.

I think Bacca and Indy should have a sheep aka Darby and Scotty... maybe let's say another Sheltie puppy? *innocent look*
 
A flirt stick is a pole or rod of some sort, with a rope or string tied to the end, with a piece of fur or unstuffed toy of some sort tied to the string. You swing it around and the dog goes chasey chase after the "prey". My husband likes to call it "squirrel on a stick" since right now we happen to have an unstuffed plush squirrrel tied to the rope.
 
Shelties do have amazing herding instincts, don't they!

I would just make sure that you want to encourage the herding, before going out and getting something that will bring the instinct out more.
