Hi from near Hartford CT

Hello everybody. I am angus, a gorgeous 1 and 1/2 year old tricolor who owns Henry, Ro and their grown son Joseph who is a final-year law student in NYC. I am way too skittish around cars, so Mom amd Dad can't bring me to visit Joseph, and he pines for me.
So, any suggestions for making me less of what J calls a hick?
And, any Sheltie people in the Queens NY area who'd welcome an extremely bright and personable young man to greet or walk their Sheltie every once in a while?

no advice for car skittishness- most people are trying to get their shelties to stop chasing/lunging after cars.
 
Welcome to the forum. I think New Jersey Sheltie Rescue is in North Jersey maybe he can give them a call and volunteer at some of their adoption events. Plenty of Shelties there for him to enjoy.

My best suggestion for you to is to find out where Angus' fear threshold is. How far does the car have to be for him to not act scared? Once you find that distance, start there. As cars drive by (and he is still at his "safe") distance, feed him treats for acting normal. If he enjoys playing, bring out his favorite toy and interact with him positively as if the car is no big deal. Keep working on this. As you work with him, try getting closer to the car. If he shows fear, back him back up to his "safe zone". This may take a lot of time, but in time he should come around.

Thank you all for the welcome: confirms my feeling that Sheltie people as a group are friendlier than average.
We know Long Island Setland Sheepdog Rescue, having applied there and also spoken to a very nice lady who runs it, before Angus adopted us. Joseph has no car because he takes subway to school and work; when he has borrowed ours for a few days, it's actually a liability because parking so sparse and costly in his part of Queens. I love the idea of his getting his "sheltie fix" at a shelter, and will pass the idea to him.
Thanks for the advice on car fear; we have made headway on the one-vehicle-now thing, but he is terrified of busy streets and esp if lg trucks and buses are whizzing by. As you said, it will take a lot of time.
