I fell in love with Shelties when I was a little girl; there was just something about them, besides their looking like "little Lassies." Though I didn't have a Sheltie then, I had rabbits, guinea pigs, a Brittany Spaniel (who was always in the pond or in the mud!) and a long-haired kitty with 7 toes on each foot.

My first "on my own" dog was half Sheltie, half Doxie, Mr. Pete by name. He was a rescue, and was a gorgeous, smart tri, though very short. He had the usual Sheltie markings, with a proud white chest, though his feet were all brown. He lived to be 17! I still miss him.

Chloe was our first purebred Sheltie, a sable and white, born in Oct. 1987; she was a great-granddaughter of Peter Pumpkin. She was the hand-fed runt of the litter, and was a true "angel's gift" for the entirety of her life. Her father, Rockwood's Goldstrike, or Striker, won Best in Breed at Westminster in 1988; baby Chloe and I watched the judge deciding between him and that awfully cute Pom that won. We really thought Striker had it!

Chloe passed away on her 12th birthday, sadly, from liver cancer. 17 days later, after some careful searching, we adopted a distant cousin of hers who we named Shyla. Shyla is a sable and white too, and has been our Sheltie watchdog and "manager" these many years. She is 12 1/2 and still going strong; the alpha dog in our 3-dog house. She's also a big mush, and will climb into my lap and curl up!

Sunny is our Shih Tzu man, who, at 9 is "all-knowing" even though he is not a Sheltie. He tolerates living with two Shelties quite well, though he thinks he is smarter than both of them! He is teaching our "baby" Sheltie Luke (who is now 1 1/2) all the secrets of life.

Luke is the son of the late Musashi, and was born in May of 2010. He is marked differently than his daddy, but his face, eyes, and body-shape are all his dads. He is a beautiful, gentle tri, and we think he'd have been a wonderful show dog if he had been a bit bigger. He has "it," that magic when he's at the end of his leash, attentively looking up at you. He is a winner in our house, as are all of our pets.

We have two "ancient" cockatiels; a dad and his son. Their son/brother passed away after a long illness just this month at the age of 23. I was lucky to be able to spend his last day sitting by him, playing his favorite "Andy Griffith" song for him. He had a peaceful ending, surrounded by his family. We picture him at the Rainbow Bridge with Mr. Pete, our Chloe, and all our other beautiful animal children who are waiting for us.

Greetings from New Jersey!
