Hello,
I am a longtime sheltie person. My first was at 16 years old, not from a true breeder but he was a sheltie none the less and very happy in the home he came from. He was 30-35 pound sable and a doll. He lived to be 12. His name was Macgyver.
As a young adult I bought my first on my own, beautiful bi-black baby boy on the GA/Alabama border. I wish I could find his breeder again. She lived in the woods and had some sort of odd monkey's on her property in a cage (it was 2002). The pups were raised in a room off of the kitchen and well cared for. He was testicular, she wanted a bi-black male to show and breed but as his boy parts didn't descend she parted with him at 12 weeks old. I was specifically looking for a bi-black. He was amazing, quiet a little punk and would snort a burst of air out when he was frustrated. He lived to be 13 and passed away last week. It was terrible. I took him to the groomers (his 3rd time at this particular place in about a year) because in his old age his skin and coat just got a bit nasty and he needed to be groomed more often.

He always would shake a bit when we would take him to the vet or the groomers, well I guess my 13yo boy's heart was not what it used to be because he had a heart attack. I hate to think i took him, I wish I had not. The two groomers sat in the back of my car while my husband drove and they did CPR on him for 10 minutes while they drove to the closest vet. It was 8:45am. It was too late, he had passed. I showed up just a few minutes later. I was in the bath when they had called me and it took my husband 10 minutes to get to him from work.
I taught him to catch frisbee's using clicker training, we tried agility but he preferred my husband as a partner so I quit that
he loved to chase me around the yard. I would stand in one spot and clap my hands and he would go in circles around me. I could do a movement with my fingers/hand and he would spin in place a I directed in the direction i told him to go.
In the second half of his life he could even be trusted off leash, he never left our side, he never had a desire to be far from us. He slept in our bed or on the floor by it and the past year had begun being put into my 5yo's bed at night so she could go to sleep without coming out 10 times a night, he gave us a gift doing that for us. Despite the fact that he seemed to think he was not allowed to mess with the kids.
If a child was over 9 or so, he would play with them but younger ones he somehow understood not to bother them. He understood body language extremely well. He would bark insanely at cars when he rode with us. He never ever barked in our house unless we clapped and scream or yelled or something, and he never barked in the backyard. He never wanted to be outside alone he would slam his body into the back door and bark to let us know, "let me in" and of course we did. Sometimes he would not even potty because he just wanted to be with us and would not potty until we gave him lots of attention if we had just come home.
He was crate trained as a puppy and he HATED having his ears bag-balmed as a puppy, I had a breeder help me do it she said she had never seen a sheltie with so much gumption he did NOT want her messing with his ears. He was gorgeous, everyone would comment on how beautiful he was (and everyone thought he was a she). He had that sheltie prance and those cute little delicate seeming paws.
I miss him so much, him following me up and down the stairs, cleaning the floor like a vaccum when the kids dropped food. Sleeping next to me pressed against my leg.
