SheltieGuy...take a look at Now! food, which is what I feed Checkers, my show dog, and Barb feeds as well. After tons of research I happened on this food, which is fairly new to the U.S. from Canada but you can get it in a number of places. It's a grain free food but the adult variety is only 26 percent protein. Puppy food is 28 percent protein, weight management 24 percent. It has wonderful ingredients, digestive enzymes and probiotics. You can find more about it at www.petcurean.com .

TOTW also offers a lower protein variety- the salmon variety, which is 26%. If you look at Justicemom's post though, she lists anywhere from 24-32% protein as a good range, and all TOTW falls within that range.
I think the ones that are a little more targeted here are your 40-50% protein foods, as opposed to the high 20-low 30% protein foods.
Grain free does not neccessarily mean high protein. TOTW falls within normal range, as does Now! which Barb is feeding, and is also grain free. You don't have to sacrifice grain free to get more of a normal protein level

TOTW Pacific stream contains lots of fish which means lots of Etho (TOTW told me via email that their supplier uses Etho) so that is out .

Im looking for low 20s... (not that anyone should follow my lead by any means) Im in pre school when it come to dog food lol.

I also feed grain free. I use Merrick BG chicken. It has a 32% protein. A bit high for me but in the winter I tend to feed higher fats and proteins because they are out in the cold and using it up quicker than in the warmer weather.
 
Besides the two that were just listed (because their site says they are not available in my area) what are some other lower protein foods?

Fluffy will not touch TOTW (and after seeing some of these posts it makes me wonder about it). Does that dog food site that everybody keeps posting have a list of the lower protein dog foods?

At the time being Fluffy is on Eukanuba, because I can't find anything "good" where I live. Living in the sticks makes it so hard to find things. :rolleyes2: I'm willing to drive a little bit to buy good food, but it has to be reasonable (like an hour or less away). There's a PetSmart and two or three Tractor Supply stores. That's pretty much it. Any ideas? :confused2:
 
The only problem I have with things like that is that I have ordered off of catalogs AND online. They never update when they are in stock. So that leaves me angry three weeks later when my dog food STILL is not in. Which means I have to call customer service, and ask where my dog food is.

This happened when I ordered from dog.com. I called their customer service line 3 TIMES, and the customer service people never cared to tell me the Wellness was on back order. I threw a fit, complained, and magically their supervisor was struck with some kind of random memory. Oh yeah. We don't have it. It's on backorder.

Also, involving that incident I ended up with a woman's ferret litter. Dog.com sent her my person information, including my credit card number, phone number, and address. So she got my phone number off of the information dog.com sent her, and called my house. I didn't talk to her personally, but my mom assured me she was very nice.

They didn't send her my dog food. Only my invoice.

No online or catalog orders from me anymore on dog food. Too much hassle. I've named three gray hairs after that incident. One hair is named dog, another one dot, and the last com. :biggrin2:

I was just going to mention this. We've been on Now! for about a month. I've put the boys on the adult maintenance diet, so its 24% protein and lower fat as well. Perfect for the winter where they exercise less. And Bacca whines and moans for his food these days. They both seem to love it.

I have to make the appointment for Bacca's next bloodwork on Monday. Then, for us at least, the verdict will be in...stay tuned!
