About Excessive Levels of Vitamin D
While vitamin D is an essential nutrient for dogs, ingestion of elevated levels can lead to potential health issues depending on the level of vitamin D and the length of exposure.

Dogs may exhibit symptoms such as vomiting, loss of appetite, increased thirst, increased urination, excessive drooling, and weight loss.

Pet parents with dogs who have consumed any of the products listed and are exhibiting any of these signs should contact their veterinarian.

In most cases, complete recovery is expected after discontinuation of feeding.

I got that too, from Dog Food Advisor. God, can you imagine how many folks are feeding these prescription diets to sick dogs - how lovely to find out you might have been poisoning them at the same time!!

It just sickens me! Logan was on these foods near the end of his life. Since he was so sick the vet prescribed these special diet foods.
He loved them and did eat when he would not touch other foods so I was happy. Now, this...
It makes my heart just sink when I think I might have hastened his demise.

I called my vet today to see if they were aware of this recall. They said they were and that they did not have any of the food on the list...

Who knows if the food I fed Logan was on the list back in July before they realized the issue...

Does anyone know why and how this is happening? How does excessive vitamin D get in the food in the first place? This is a fairly recent problem, and it is not limited to one manufacturer. Makes you wonder....

Wow. I must say, it makes me worry about small brands if even Hills is having recalls. Advance had a major recall in Australia last year. Luckily it's not the a/d which they were given Deska at the emergency vet, although he was very sick on that so I switched him to RC when we got home. Gloria - maybe Logan was on the a/d as that's the highest calorie 'critical care' one.

I am still waiting for that brand that gave Tully pancreatitis to get back to me. Honestly, dog food regulation in Australia is crap.

There isn't anything that says what the correct level is. Just says that it was due to a supplier error and in response to a complaint that a pet was showing signs of elevated Vit D.

It's worrying when the suppliers are being so lax. They should be named and shamed as well. Over here there was a recall of a Salmon product due to supplier issues. But it always takes a dog getting sick.

Logan was on k/d and i/d for several months before his passing.

The whole situation with this many foods being tainted is absolutely unconscionable! They charge premium prices for this food since it is prescription based! He loved the food and would not eat even the home cooked meals I tried! So, I thought I was doing the best for him!

There needs to stiff financial penalties for this misconduct by so called experts! I have no way to prove he got the tainted food since it was last year that I lost him. Still, it angers me other pets were put into peril!

The food I feed shows vitamin D3 supplement as the third to last item in the ingredients list. I just sent an email asking what is going on, and what they are doing to prevent this from happening. Two business days for a response...
