Hitting Mommy?

So Max just turned 1 this month and his behavior and personality is starting to show more and he is growing more and more impatient.

So a few weeks ago me and michael were sitting on the couch and max was laying on michael and i looked at the clock and went "Max Bedtime" he perked his ears up and looked at me but didnt budge. So i said it again and this time Max looks at me and then just hits me in my face as if he was telling me no.

I was mad he hit me but even more shocked that he did than anything else. Michael of course just stared at him then laughed at me. Then i said to max. Max you do not hit mommy..now you get your tail up to bed...BEDTIME NOW! and of course he hit me again :no: and michael just grabbed him and took him off to bed....

And then a couple of days ago i woke up to feed Charlie(the cat) and max and also take max to the potty and i guess he had to go really really bad because as i was giving charlie food max barked at me and i was like okay i have to feed you brother then we will go outside and he barked again and i said Max you have to wait. So he sat down beside me for about ten seconds and i bent down to give charlie his food in his bowl and max once again hit me but this time on my shoulder. And i said max you dont hit mommy.

So now max just hits me when he wants something or doesnt want to do something or when he gets impatient.

Is this normal with 1 yr olds? I know when charlie turned 1 he would yell at me and daddy...but max only barks and hits mommy never daddy..:confused2:
 
Bailey is a hitter. Every since she was a puppy, she always had a attitude. I would tell her "no" and she would "mouth" back at me.

She hits me too. If I don't move fast enough for her, she'll take her front paw and smack the back of me leg.

She threw a temper tantrum yesterday. There was a bowl of carrots on the coffee table. She put her two front paws on the table and was barking at the bowl. I told her "off" and she didn't listen. Since it was out of her reach, she took her paw and started smacking other things off the table. She pushed off a water bottle and a candle. Then, my friend told her a firm "No" and she mouthed at him. Sort of like a whine and bark. It basically sounded like she was saying "i don't care! I want the carrotssss!"

She's almost 8 months and has been a little demon for about a month now.

What are you supposed to do when they're mouthing and hitting? Put her in a time out? I don't want to lock her in her crate.
 
Megan has a certain bark when she is talking back to me..She'll be 5 months next Monday and will get growly and nippy if I am trying to get something out of her mouth. She gets certain barks when she is "arguing" with me!

By hitting i mean he is taking his paw and swatting at me like a 2yr old human would do. ha :lol:

As i read about everyone's hitting experiences it makes me laugh beacuse this is just so funny. I have never had a dog hit me before haha wow :lol:

I have know clue if your supposed to put them in time out. Do i just say go in the corner if i do he will probably hit me again hah :lol:

I think they have cat bred into them.:biggrin2: Mine has a couple of new toys that are just too scary for words. She really scratches and carries on trying to bat them around with her feet. But she doesn't want to actually touch the toy. Lots of circling, scratching, and jumping. It's really comical.
 
I haven't had this problem, but since it seems to be an attention getting behavior, the first thing I would try is NOT giving attention. No eye contact, no laughing (hard, I know), not even a verbal correction. I would turn my back and/or leave the room.
 
I have my dogs do a sit or down, if they are way out of control, a settle. Although I do think Phebe's suggestion would work too.

It is a attention seeking behavior or possible a little herding(move on sheep) like barking. Never give them anything when they do it.
 
Puppy Time Out, in the monks book they say to have the puppy sit facing outward between your legs and have the left hand on the muzzle and the right on it's chest to calm them down.

Zak has not learned how to talk bac yet but Maggie does...she has a little grumble she does. She comes and bumps me with her two front paws if she wants to go out really bad. But mostly her grumbling is left to when she does not want to be cuddled. Katie used to paw at me for attention and sometimes she would give you a bark as like she wanted to get in the last word.
