Hmmm! How to be delicate here.....

Ok, so I'm grooming my two 9 month old un-fixed boys tonight. Just a little brush to "freshen" them up.

I notice that around Indy's ***** is some crusty matter, and his ***** itself is looking a little red and slightly protuding. I flip Bacca over and he is clean as clean can be. And totally tucked up inside.

Is what I'm seeing with Indy normal? Or should I be concerned?

Clean the area around it with a warm, wet, soapy (gentle soap) washclothe. The area might be "burnt" by feces, or it might be impacted a bit (or hard to him to poo with crust around it). Wash it up tonight, and look at it tomorrow. If it still looks the same tomorrow, a visit to the vet would be a good idea. His anal glands might be impacted (could be the reason for him protruding a bit.)

ETA: Not normal, though.

Hmmm.... I'll try again. The forum filter filtered out the real area in question. The area in question is his "reproductive organ". Nothing to do with his chute.

Check to see if his hair is very thick there. I've had where the hair was holding moisture from them "cleaning" themselves causing a sore area. Or could he have been nipped by one of the other dogs or a flea or something causing an irritation? I had a boy this summer that got stung by a bee on his testicles and from him licking it, caused a hot spot type area which was red and got crusty. A little chlorhexidine a few times a day cleared him up pretty quickly.

Could the "sticking" out just be because he was happy? I show a doxie that every time I put him on the table he gets a little....uh LARGE...appendage LOL Pretty embarassing sometimes during judging

Ah, hm! Perhaps he is "happy", but I really don't know what the "happy" sign is. My forever pup, Timber, was fixed long before he ever got to the "happy" stage? :rolleyes2:

I just see crust around his "happy" area and a reddish-pink wormy thing that Indy has but Bacca doesn't - even though they are the same age. (ok, I know I sound like a moron but I now know that if I don't talk "in code" it will be filtered! :-(

If the crust is near the opening, it is likely just from the urine staying in the hair. If it farther up the shaft, I would look into other things.

The "happy" thing would be if he gets "hard" (like a man LOL) and you would know because he would have two lumps about half way up the shaft on either side and his "wormy" thing could start to protrude.

Even though the boys are the same age, one could be hitting maturity a bit sooner. Does the "happy" one lift his leg and maybe the other does not?

The bulge (and reddish area) sounds like he's just excited. Sometimes you'll be able to see the bulges right away, but if he's just protruding a little bit, you might not be able to see them (the more excited, the bigger the bulges get, and the more he protrudes.) I've flipped Luke over (he's 10 months right now) a few times and found him excited...he got put down really quick! :D

The crust is probably because he's not cleaning himself right. Just take a warm, wet and soapy washcloth and do it for him! Could be just pee, could be pee, snow/water and dirt, could be ejaculate (they can please themselves...) Kind of gross, but it's par for course with boy dogs!

If he's got too much hair around that area, try trimming it away, just around that area. That will help keep the crusties away.

Thanks everyone! I kinda feel like an idiot  but Timber was fixed much younger and when I flipped Bacca over to check him out, I couldn't see anything at all.

I did check with the breeder and she confirmed the same. Phone call to the Vet on Monday! Far too much "loving" going on and no, I don't mean Sheltie kisses! :rolleyes2::smile2:

lol,, barb,, you ask the questions nobody else will, but everyone needs to know.. lol :lol::lol::lol:

I think we should have a sticky of all the questions you ask in a nice tidy faq for quick reference..

Personally I'm rolling on the floor here between the delicate pussy-footing and the mental image I'm getting of Barb with her nose two inches from her boys' "happy place."
