no no no, natural does not always mean safer! especially when using things with natural oils in them.
when i get back to work i will look in my aroma therapy book.... there are loads of oils and things that are all natural that can even kill a dog. Cause miscarriage, sever skin reactions, etc.

Correct. Neither does modern medicine always mean safer. That is why one needs to read up on either side.

What I meant when I said that the articles on natural being bad made little sense to me, I meant things like the raw diet. And a slightly variation in the definition of "natural". You can mean natural as in not processed, from the wild, or you can mean natural as in something an animal (such as a dog) would do or eat in the wild. I meant the latter when I made the statement on articles against natural. Mainly, I was thinking of all of the articles against a raw diet. They make no sense to me because dogs are carnivores (IMO), and because the raw diet has been great for my dogs. I was also thinking of holistic treatments recommended by holistic vets.

I agree. If you looked at some of the pills/medicine and what it could do then you'd never give your dog anything.

A good example of this is the flea pill. I forgot the name of it, but they are advertising for it like crazy at the vet's office. I read a short read out of all the things it might do to your dog. NO THANK YOU. It's kind of like people medicine. When you take something for heartburn, for example. The symptoms may include: heartburn, stroke, weight gain, your right big toe is going to fall off, complete nervous system shut down, ect. Of course I made that last part about the heartburn up, but I think you get what I mean.

I'm not changing medicines though.

in my personal experience the flea pill "Comfortis" is safer than frontline. The reason I say that is that I have seen many skin irritations, hairloss, and sick dogs due to frontline.

with comfortis I have only seen upset stomach. That is actually what I use on Lynn because even the vets here will tell you.... frontline nor advantix works very well here on the KY/TN border. It only will cut your fleas in about half.
Ruckus cannot take comfortis, it gives him the squirts.

I've never used Frontline. I use Advantage. I really, really hate giving pills.

That does look really nice, but very expensive!

Maybe something like:

that would work just as well? Or even buying cedar oil and diluting it in some water and spritzing that about? I may look into this as well, as I have seen a flea or two on my boys (with the harsh non-natural stuff, I haven't switched yet - but will be soon).

Cedar is definatly a great flea repelant.We always used cedar shavings in our kennel,at the old house.

We have a small building here,really quite nice,that the former owner would park his 2 motercyles in,we just converted into Earnhardt's own little house outside.It helps if he gets caught in the rain,he goes in there,and is quite comfy,and it is bedded with many bags of cedar shavings. Love the smell of cedar~

I prefer the Comfortis pill too but it really should be given with food. I stick it in their dinner with the pumpkin and no problems with it. I hate the way the spot products make the fur yucky and we were having problems with them not working so much here either. some of the more recent posts of new products look interesting but we'll wait until next spring to check into those

Well, if everybody here likes it then maybe it wouldn't hurt to try it for a month or two to see how it does. Smudge doesn't have a flea on him, and I use Advantage. The mange dips might be killing all the fleas, too.

Do they do it based on weight like everything else? I'm fixing to have to move up a size in medicine anyway. The last time Smudge was weighed they said he was 15.5 pounds, and this was the day he got fixed (around August 20th). I'm curious to see how much he weighs now. I think I'll ask if they can weigh him Wednesday when I take him back.
