Homemade treat recipes.

So I'm planning on going to the grocery store tomorrow and buying lots of supplies for homemade treats. If anyone has any recipes to share, that would be greatly appreciated :)

A word of warning though. The canned salmon is a bit smelly, but the dogs go crazy over it.

I googled 'dog cookies' a few months ago and after some conversions and a few ingredient swaps, this is what I ended up with:

Peanut Butter Dog Cookies

4 eggs (2 for dough, 2 for wash)
2 tbsp canola oil
1 tbsp honey
1 cup chicken broth (I use the low sodium stuff)
1 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
2/3 cup all purpose flour
1/3 cup blended oatmeal
1 cup peanut butter (I use organic)

1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. In a large bowl, whisk together 2 eggs, the oil, and the honey. Whisk in the chicken broth.

2. Combine flours and oatmeal in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. With the mixer on medium speed, slowly pour in the chicken broth mixture, then add the peanut butter. Mix until the dough comes together (about 1 minute).

3. Divide dough in half (it will ooze some oil the longer it sits… I put some wax paper down when cutting these out!) and roll out each ball to about 1/2 inch thick. Place on baking sheets sprayed with cooking oil or place on parchment paper.

4. Whisk the remaining eggs in a small bowl and brush over the cookies. Allow to dry for 10 minutes and brush again (second brush optional).

5. Bake until golden brown, about 15 minutes (depends on the size of the cookies).

I made these as gifts for all of the puppies at the conclusion of our puppy class in the fall. (I used a small dog bone cookie cutter and it made probably upwards of 60 cookies). I made them again around the holidays and froze a bunch since I don't like to let them sit in the fridge for longer than a week! My woof enjoys them quite a bit.

A friend game me this recipe in the fall but I haven't tried it yet (mainly because I'm not a huge fan of pumpkin).

Peanut Butter and Pumpkin Dog Treats

2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)
1/2 cup peanut butter
2 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 cup water or as needed

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Mix all ingredients together except the water, then add water sparingly until dough is sticky (the amount of water needed depends on the oil content of the peanut butter).

Roll the dough on a lightly floured surface and cut into shapes.

Bake on a cookie sheet for about 20 minutes. Allow to cool before storing.

If you end up making these, you'll have to let me know how they go over!

My dogs like pumpkin, so I'm sure I'll try these

My fave:

1 package Jenni O ground turkey breast 93/7 lean - 20 ounces

1/2 cup cracker crumbs

1/2 cup grated low fat Parmesan cheese

2 t garlic

2 large eggs

Mix all ingredient together well. It should be a soft mixture that will hold its shape. You can add a few drops of water or a few extra cracker crumbs if necessary. Spray cookie sheet with cooking spray .

Form into meatballs and then smash so they are more flat than round. Small ones are better than larges ones as they cook better. When cooking, they should be lightly browned on the bottom. Cut one open to make sure it is cooked. Bake 10-20 minutes on 375.

After cooking you can freeze them -
