Hot spot help..

I'm having such a hard time. I found a hot spot on Coopers back. The hair was matted around it. So I had to shave it :( well now I can't keep the hair around it from getting stuck in it. I don't want to shave more hair unless I absolutely have to. I keep an E-collar on him when I don't have my eyes on him and I have been putting triple antibiotic on it. I also started him on cephalexin BID. Any suggestions?

Oof - poor guy. Hot spots are no fun at all.

I would lean towards discontinuing the ointment, especially now that he's on an oral antibiotic. One of the tricks to healing a hot spot is to get it dry - and the antibiotic ointment will keep it wet. Drying the spot out will also keep the surrounding hair from sticking in the ointment/goo/discharge that's going on.

Try sprinkling the spot with Gold Bond medicated powder (the one in the yellow can), instead of the triple-antibiotic ointment. The powder will dry it out, and will help with the itchies, too.

You are quite right to keep him from licking the spot, and to keep the hair trimmed to encourage air circulation. Once you get the spot dried out, and as long as you keep him from picking at it, it will begin to heal.

Olive had one by her tail over Christmas- the area was trimmed (now her pants have a funny 1" chunk sticking out), she wore an inflatable collar all the time, and she was put on an NSAID and cream. The cream was only a scant amount 2x a day and we used a gentle baby wipe around the area when it started to clump. Unfortunately, it did take a couple of weeks to fully heal.

In the past I have tackled those with apple cider vinegar (Braggs) wetting a cotton ball first then dipping in ACV....it dries them out. Usually takes several days wiping it gently 3X a day...
 
Cooper's hot spot looks just like the one my Danny gets. I have found that he has flare ups when he eats grain and corn so I try to watch that. My vet had me try a great shampoo and conditioner. The shampoo is called KetChlo by Virbac. The lotion is called ResiCort by Virbac. The combination of these two clear up his hot spot and other itchy areas right away. They have been a blessing for us.

I had a chow that had the same problem....and we found the solution.

It was due to an allergy, so we changed the food to another of rice and lamb and monthly baths with a special shampoo from the vet....I dont remember the name, but It was really expensive :dead:

When she had itching crisis we gave to her antihistamines and antibiotics until it passed....after that we smear Vaseline on the hot spot to help the fur grow.

What's weird is he never scratched or itched! I rotate the fromm four star and I had recently switched them to the chicken protein. Without knowing if that is the problem, should I try it again when that protein comes back around rotation?
 
In fact, my chow was allergic to that kind of protein (the chicken)....that's why we changed it to a lamb food as our vet suggested us.

The poor girl was eating the same food for 12 years, but never got bored of it!

The monthly baths with that shampoo helped a lot too. But I don't remember the name.
